RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Are you experiencing depression?
I was depressed in 7th till half-term of 8th. I snapped out of it during the terminals, but I realized it was depression only in hindsight. School was a part of the reason, but I believe that the Turds and my hormones were the main reason. Can you add some more options- like, "I was depressed because of school", or "I was depressed due to some other reason" ? I don't think that those who aren't depressed currently have never experienced it.

RuleBreaker, good ideas...we are planning to put together a more "scientific" survey. I just wanted a kind've general notion of where things stand. But yes, an option for WAS depressed would be good. I'll see if I can add that to the poll...

Are you experiencing depression?
We think this will be the beginning of a greater effort to know more about depression as it relates to school, and helping SSN people identify if they are depressed, and what they can do about it.

Are you experiencing depression?
Eidolon, yeah...I'm not a psychologist but I think some depression can be caused by immediate circumstances and then go away when those circumstances change. Not so much for me -- I became depressed after several big life-changes happened at the same time, and have had to be on meds ever since. If I try to go off them, I zoom back into the bad place.

RE: Are you experiencing depression?
Now that I'm in college school hasn't been bringing me down so much but public school always did from hellementary forward where I was bullied by both other students and a select few cunty teachers. By middle school I was sick of the school system and got kicked out before being diagnosed with depression at age 13 or 14. I refused the meds and continued to be depressed, of course. This was right around the time I joined SS.

RE: Are you experiencing depression?
Yes, I've been experiencing a consistent depression since 6th grade, and a lot of it has to do with school and the problems that it has given me.

No, and I don't think I've ever felt low enough for a long enough period of time to be considered depressed.

Are you experiencing depression?
Well we've all been at least "temporarily" depressed, but I'm assuming you mean the actual depression that tends to be long term.
Even then, I'm more likely to get angry than sad. I got that primal rage within. Some get tears with tears, others get angry with tears, and those like me just get angry with angry(if there are tears, it's mostly a bodily response to the stiffening of muscles and the massive burst of hot blood gushing through the body).

Brainiac, for me, the first sign that I'm depressed is that I'm getting angry at everyone.

RE: Are you experiencing depression?
Wel I dont get angry for no reason or lash out at people based on my hatred of something I cant physically display my anger at. If Im angry, its because somebody did something that angers me (often involves breaching my personal code of respect and maybe honor. Lying is pretty up there as main reason, followed by irresponsibility, arrogance and ignorance.)
Usually calm down after scolding target of anger, or if I want to remain civil I just pace around without thinking. Im a pretty stoic/happy person, so if I get angry somebody must have real done something to piss me off. Otherwise I dont really get sad for much things.

Are you experiencing depression?
I was pretty depressed throughout most of my school years. It sometimes comes back for a while, because I've still got some leftover issues from being bullied and not having real friends nearby for so many years... but I've overcome a lot of it.

RE: Are you experiencing depression?
Yes I can say, on top of that is school and because not having real friends in the past, but now I'm doing better. I have become more aware of things or mature if you know what I mean . Not liking to go to school ,makes me feel sad and sometimes nervous when I need to try hard on my grades to not fail the last year at HS ... Also school made me drop doing things that I enjoy like drawing for example, and I don't even listen to music for weeks...

Yeah, I'm depressed. Primarily because of school and its constant horrors. I'm socially retarded and have zero friends, which also contributes.

My depression started around 8th grade and ended at the 2nd half of 10th grade, where it transformed into apathy.

Are you experiencing depression?
My mother is probably depressed, and suffering from anxiety, lots of stress, anger issues etc etc.
I'd have to find a shrink who speaks Turkish and understands Turkish culture to get her treatment, assuming I could actually get her to go(it'd probably have to be a home visit).

Dikon5, something I've observed...it seems that compliant elementary school students start to become individuals and to understand more about what they are being asked to do and how that conflicts with what they want to do.
Then in middle school, comes the rebellion. It's perfect for the temperament of the early adolescent -- and it looks to adults like righteous indignation -- that they will question, question, question...and stick up for their rights.
But when that fails, what do you have left? The will to fight the system seems to leave, and what kids are left with is a compliant attitude of "I'll do as little as I have to in order to get you to leave me alone." They have given up.
Does this sound familiar?
