RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What would a free society look like?

I am curious what people here would say to this. In other words, a society where teenagers or even children were truly free. Free to form voluntary relationships for example. Free to spend their time as the chose. Free to live where they wanted, to travel where they wanted.

How might this work on a practical basis?

I am interested to see what people have to say about this.

RE: What would a free society look like?

I think most people would avoid school if that would bring good jobs anyways

Some kind of order would form fast, because most people need to be told what to do.

RE: What would a free society look like?

Disturbing to conservatives.

The hedonist in me says it'd look good as we'd all be permitted to seek pleasure(not at expense of others) within the constraint of social norms or legal restrictions.

My conservative side thinks societal collapse will occur because people will try to screw others over and create chaos.

Well a more autonomous society, would likely lead to something. I dont know to lazy to write, but no we don't need social norms, gender roles, rigid schooling to keep us in order. There will be no chaos or death and destruction, in fact were better without these things in our lives, because they are the root causes of violence, mistrust, and hate.

Humans are the root of violence, greed and mistrust and hate. Not many animal species kill their own specie for a shiny rock that has no real use except for the fact it's shiny thus perceptively valuable.

We'd still need some sort of laws and also enforcement. The badness might subside as generation after generation is properly integrated but evil will always be there, and so must protection.

What would a free society look like?

Well... good question. I was just thinking earlier that the main problem with humanity is how gullible people are... then I thought that it's easier to replace bad leaders than it is to fundamentally change everyone on the planet...

Most limitations are self-imposed, so to start, people would get rid of all of those except the ones they actually want for whatever reason.

People wouldn't need to "go to work" just to make money to feed themselves or "be successful"... they would do work that inspires them... and have more fun. Then there would be no stupid pressure to get grades and go to college and all those hoops just to get "somewhere" in life... whatever that means. Those things might still exist though, but only as much as people need and want them to.

It's actually kinda hard to imagine, in a way. If everyone could live like me... I'm not sure what that would look like. Even I still have a lot of self-imposed limitations that hold me back... lol. It's hard to shake those things off.

RE: What would a free society look like?

In certain ancient societies, you were considered an adult if you were 15/16.

Brainiac, that is overly objective and doesn't take into account the fact that humans are altruistic. Laws are necessary to contain the bad people, and enforcement must exist. Therefore, the idea of free society is muddled at best, and what half-baked ideas rise from it will sink back down due to the fact that it simply can't be created.

Humans are altruistic only when they feel a need to, or because social norms have created a custom of altruism in certain areas.

What if altruism was the social norm? What would that look like?

What would a free society look like?

Might take a generation or two.

Social manipulation requires only number and time.

Like you said, most of these limitations are self imposed...nobody is holding a gun to your head or threatening you to conform. (I mean most adults in the better-off parts of the world- not china or N. Korea, where people literally out guns to their heads.) Even if we point out the self-imposition of these limits, will they change just because we told them to?
The word self-imposed is the key; these people have made their choice pretty clear. I actually had this kind of discussion with Turd and Turdette; the outcome is what made me lose respect for them, among other things. It's as valid a choice as any, and I think we should respect that.

Some people are sheep, while others can be wolves, cats, snakes, tigers, lions...What we have developed today came from a society without rules or restrictions of any kind.

Hey, human nature is the root of all evil. Similarly, human nature is the source of all good, as well. Don't turn an internal conflict into something external.
