RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Scrube?

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

RE: "Voices of School Survival"

since I'm not terribly astute at tech stuff I'm not sure what's even possible. but I was thinking it would be a very tangible way to reach kids in school who don't have any support. I mean I know only a handful of kids where I live even think about getting on Facebook. and those are usually the ones who actually like school. the others only use Instagram and/or twitter if anything @all

I think collaborating with the I Hate School FB page(s) could be useful. One has 150,000 likes.

Beyond that, YouTube is a big space we're completely absent from. We need to get some videos made! If anyone can film some things and submit footage, or has any ideas, let us know. Even just vlogging. I think that showing how learning can work instead is important -- lots of people complain, but they don't see anything as being open to change in many cases.

I submit unrestricted permission to make public use of any of my posts if the creator of this thread deems them beneficial to the youth rights movement. I am 16 years old, in case you want to provide my age alongside quotations.

As for the importance of reaching out over social media, I could not agree more. I am inclined to believe that youth outnumber adults on such websites, and that even in a strictly traditional household where a child may be denied the luxury of excellent books on youth rights, s/he will be able to garner abundant information from the internet without evoking the ire of his/her parents.

I must say I really like where this is all going. The FB page has more than 2,500 likes, and will probably keep growing. It's such a great yet very easy way to spread our message.

Perhaps we should encourage students and adults alike to print and post this on walls, etc. That would really put us closer to cloud nine.

RE: "Voices of School Survival"

It's worth noting that most of the page's likes so far are thanks to FB ads.

But, the fact that so many people who have seen the ads decided to like the page says something. There's a large potential audience of people who can relate. And only so many people Google "I hate school," even if they do.

One of the problems with FB pages is that not all posts are served to all Likers. Of course, not everyone keeps up with everything in their news feed, but page posts are also just not shown to everyone.

On average, it seems like around 10-15% of likers view each post to the page -- unless it's promoted, or goes viral through re-shares. And that number is typical, based on what I've read.

So, I've tried promoting a few of the posts. FB has a policy against promoted image-based posts with >20% text on the image, like text-based memes, so it's stopped the promotions each time. However, boosting posts to thousands of viewers still results in a bunch of likes and some re-shares.

So, in short, when people see these messages, some relate to them.

Hansgrohe Wrote:Perhaps we should encourage students and adults alike to print and post this on walls, etc. That would really put us closer to cloud nine.

Yeah. Why not give it a try? Go for it!

Based on experience, I'm not sure how many people here will actually do that. But, maybe some can try it. And, maybe others would if they could simply order a kit -- like that "box" idea we were talking about at the beginning of the summer -- that contained pre-printed flyers, postcards, pamphlets, and the like. Maybe even some t-shirts. Smile

(In bulk, like in quantities of 1000+, it's possible to order printed 2-sided full-color postcards for 2-3 cents each. So, a kit could have a hundred postcards for the cost of $2-3, etc. Much cheaper than printer ink.)

I wonder how many people who find SS, or like VOSS, would pay, say, $20-30, to get a kit with hundred postcards, some flyers, maybe some cards with conversation-starter quotes on them, maybe a booklet and/or a t-shirt?

I think one of the risks is, eventually, all the quotes we can produce can ultimately seen as cliches. Sure, we all have potential, sure, a lot of parents use takeways for bad grades, sure, prison-like conditions play a role in making messed up people, sure, education needs to change, sure, it's a compelling vision to imagine a better world for future generations, sure, some parents see the problems and homeschool, sure, there are those people out there who live in some kind of paradise, sometimes a single moment can change a person's entire life.

But hey, things here, now, any given person's currently-perceived reality, are what they are" for the foreseeable future. So, what's the point of paying attention to anything, or getting excited about anything?

I think there's a point -- but that's one set of obstacles to overcome, when it comes to promoting things.

A big question is, what next? After all, money doesn't grow on trees. Razz
