RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

"Voices of School Survival"
I have been trying to figure out a way to get the voices of kids who hate school out to a wider audience. People need to see that not only do many kids hate school, but their feelings are entirely reasonable and understandable....even smart.
What I'd like to do is start a Facebook "page" called Voices of School Survival. I'll take some of your posts and put them in a meme image, and post them on this page, which people can "like" and share.
How great woudl it be to get, like, a few thousand likes!
I would like to create a mechanism for getting permission from the individuals whose words I use in the quotes. I'll always use your screen name, and with your permission, put your age as well.
I'll take quotes from the boards, chats and hangouts, and you will NEVER see one of yours appear without permission. I don't want to cramp anyone's style, that would be really bad.
Any thoughts on this?

RE: "Voices of School Survival"
I like it a lot.
This place has always been a wondrous haven for those seeking relief from school, and anything related that they're missing to keep them sane, like a social life or like-minded individuals that are willing to talk and hangout with them.
That being said, it's also always had one problem: visibility. Nobody finds this place without some sort of recommendation or pointed finger, and that makes the potential number of people we can help dwindle. If you can help get the message of SS out, that would work really well for the purpose of these forums.

Fear my quotes!
Unless you pick out some of the more lucid stuff. If you could filter by thanks it'd probably be easier but I don't think that's possible...

This is a great idea, we could actually reach a lot of people with this.

One gripe I had with this is:
"..become lifeless cogs.. that never changes" but I think you purposefully kept that.
Other than that, there's a chance it might take off, but it requires a lot of time spent searching for quotes that aren't.. well, horrible, not to mention the fact that SS may become quite a limited and depleted resource and you might have to expand... somewhere else.
Until then, good luuuuck.

Brainiac, unless you specifically give me blanket permission, I'll run any quote I see by the author before publishing!
Hey--also--if you read something that you think is meaningful (and short) and packs a punch, send it to me!

You have my quilted blanket permission to place underneath your duvet.
Wait...nope but you still have the blanket of permission to quote at will(or at predetermined depending in your belief of free will)

"Voices of School Survival"
Lisa I would like to contribute if at all possible. I am 22 and had a hell of a time throughout high school dealing with homophobia. I would like to share the legal aspects as well for those who may find themselves entangled in such a situation. I successfully received an out of court settlement as an adult from the events which occurred. I can only speak in generalities as I am under a non disclosure agreement. But still feel I could add valuable insight.
PM me if interested.
Thanks

You can totally use anything I've ever said, if anything I said actually counts, since I'm old and stuff.
Oh, and I'm not American either... you said in the description that it's for students in America... :( This is a global issue...

Punishment for getting bad grades...I just don't know what to think about that.
It's like people don't even consider what learning means...and how little sense it makes to punish kids for NOT DOING IT.
