RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What is a "School-Averse" Student? Crowd sourcing a FAQ

Here is my idea: I ask a FAQ question and hopefully get 2-3 replies. Then I'll generate a related question, and wait for 2-3 answers, then go on, and so forth.

First question: What does it mean to be school-averse?

Yeah, just means a person who, like, is emotionally, intellectually, socially allergic to school (or one of the above)

But I'd like to hear other people's answers!

It means to be evasive of a tribal environment with an irrational hierarchy based on immature perceptions reinforced by the ignorance of the adult overseers. The disgust at an institution that milks your mind for better test scores for the greedy betterment of the school and its reputation rather than the common wellbeing of the pupils.

What is a "School-Averse" Student? Crowd sourcing a FAQ

The definitions of the underlying word help:

averse - "having a strong dislike of or opposition to something"

aversion - "a strong dislike or disinclination"

Origin: late 16th century (originally denoting the action of turning away or averting one's eyes): from Latin aversio(n-), from avertere ‘turn away from’

Inventing more terms for "people who hate school and would prefer to learn in an environment of their own choosing" is not gonna help, IMO. I know that we need a label that defines us properly, but what sticks won't always be what we wanted to stick.

I'm not looking for labels, but trying to dig into their meaning. Bear with me. Xcriteria, I just realized this is a little like the plan I had for Question Education (an idea I had for an online course).

Next question: Why do you think more kids are not "school-averse?"

Yes, or they can't identify it(or won't) and pin the feeling on something else. Most likely due to the perception that being anti-school is abnormal as preached by parents and teachers.

Agree with what Brainiac said.
It should also be noted that the system by nature isn't meant to be for everyone. Therefore, some will actually like it, but many others will despise it.

Some people like the structure, and the predictability. "If I do X, I will get Y" - kind of thing.

Also some people who actually have friends and a social life at school may like it for that reason.

hah!

So do you think it's a defect that makes some kids like school and do well? Sorta the opposite of the way school looks at it?

Also:

what would you advise younger students to do in order to survive school and not go crazy?

Don't make your parents the bad guys. They just listen to what the gov't told them. They are taught to believe that school leads to success, and since they aren't living in their parents' basement, therefore that must be true. They want the best for you, but they are under gov't deception that school is the best for you.

It's a very familiar position -- I can't think of very many students here who aren't in that situation. Maybe we can come up with a few strategies.

My grades would be considered good by most parents.
But I get grounded for 6 weeks if I get a 83 or lower on a report card.
Considering that my report card comes in Wendsday and I already know that I have a 81 in Spanish, you may not see me on this site for a month and a half

Taking away devices seems to be the default consequence for grades that don't meet parents' expectations.

Here's another question for the FAQ: What would you tell your parents about school if you felt you could?
