RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Worst types of teachers

1. The ones that treat you like a little kid. "Oh my class is full of 15/16 year olds? I must make them write their name in the bathroom book when they go to the restroom"

2. The kid-hater. Always whining about kids and such. Makes you wonder why they are a teacher in the first place.

3. MWHW teachers. (My Way or the HighWay teachers) Gosh I hate these types teachers. Usually a math teacher. Always wants the problem to be solved a certain way, even if the alternate solutions are easier/more accurate. Regardless if the answer is correct, if it's not their way, they make the answer wrong.

4. Homework-loving teachers. Self-Explanatory

5. Test-loving teachers. (A.K.A my Spanish teacher) Even worse than the homework lovers. Hands out a test/quiz every week. Makes you wonder if they have a fetish for seeing other peoples' anxiety.

You may add your own as well.

There are teachers that can be a combo.

Worst types of teachers

There are three main types of teachers I can think of who really grind my gears:

1) The harsh, sarcastic type with a tough love, sometimes outright sadistic style of teaching; this type contains kid-hater/MWHW traits in abundance. I currently have two teachers like this. Let's call the worst of the pair Puck, as they've seen fit to puck more hockey posters up than math ones. Puck's school-time hobbies include publicly humiliating you, wasting class time explaining every last detail of why you're their worst block, failing you for "talking back" and outright telling you that she enjoys making you miserable. Just this morning Puck decided out of nowhere that because they couldn't fail people for not buying a calculator from the school, they would give a ridiculous amount of long division problems to everyone and fail anyone who couldn't complete them in a minute. Pleasant, right?

2) The type of teacher who knows little to nothing about their subject and instead relies heavily on the textbook/provided curriculum for everything. They adore unnecessary assignments, and cannot even answer your questions unless the answers are right in front of them, which defeats the purpose as you see them as well. Honestly, this kind is at least tolerable as you can largely study on the side and anything they do not know, you aren't expected to. Easy As do not make up for getting nothing out of the class, however.

3) The final type is the one you grow to really enjoy being with. They certainly aren't perfect, but they understand how to keep things interesting, are reasonable, can be at least civil to everyone, and know how to carry a conversation with you. Inevitably they end up betraying you though, whether in the form of showing one of a kid with grade-obsessed parents's assignments as missing or giving away information you confide to them to the administration. It's just really sad to me that even the nicest teachers ate restricted by regulations and can worsen people's experiences without even meaning to.

Worst types of teachers

The ones that are utterly incompetent and can't see what their students are doing.

For example, my teacher (Let's call him Mr. Trinh) Mr. Trinh made us write 4 page essays about basketweaving and other crap college style. He barely read them, so you could copy and paste a wikipedia article and pass it off as your own. In my Comp Sci class, the dude takes no notice of what is on other people's screens you could be on a porn website and he wouldn't notice. It makes me wonder how he got a job in the first place. He relies on giving us papers and letting us figure out how to solve them by ourselves. Makes me wonder how the fuckwit of a teacher got hired anyways.

Sexist teachers. I had a misandristic teacher in 5th grade. Would be more strict on boys, an example being encouraging girls to skip school to see the latest Twilight film, but then would claim that nearly any boy out sick is lying (in my case, I was clearly fatigued the day earlier.)

Can't help but link to some tropes here.

Sadist Teacher

Evil Teacher

And yeah, combinations are possible.

That said, sometimes people change. And, it's possible to assume the worst, when there's more to the person and their story. So, I suggest looking at teachers in three (or more dimensions), not just as "types."

A good question is, why does a teacher act the way they do? Is it out of some kind of intention ("this will help you learn"), however possibly misguided... or is it because they're being forced to by their own Powers that Be... or are they just doing what worked for them, or what they learned to do in teacher school... or something else? Exploring that can help the dark world of school come to life, and maybe open up opportunities to help teachers see things in new ways. Smile

RE: Worst types of teachers

I've had teachers that both had a My Way or the Highway mentality and didn't really know their stuff as much as they should. While I have had worse experiences, those were really annoying and made me give up more easily.

RE: Worst types of teachers

Wicked

You can't really keep things students tell you secret.

If a conversation moves in that direction I tell my students in advance not to tell me anything they don't want shared.

I guess it boils down to we're not friends. It sounds harsh but from where I sit it's only sensible. I make it clear up front though. I don't pretend to be something I'm not. I'm just the teacher. I'm not a parent, friend, counselor, or any of that. I'm not going to keep a secret that could get me in trouble. But like I said, I think the important thing is making this clear before anything gets said.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

The ones who are determined to help you are the worst, in my opinion. They'll call your parents and warn them if you so much as twitch in their class.

Don't play chess with pigeons-they'll just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut about like they won anyway.

RE: Worst types of teachers

Before you read this first one: I'm on your side. I'm just trying to look at it both ways.

Quote:1. The ones that treat you like a little kid. "Oh my class is full of 15/16 year olds? I must make them write their name in the bathroom book when they go to the restroom"

It's under the administration. Some teachers are more scared of them than others. It's for "security" that you write where you are for the administrators to know should something happen. The teachers that don't bother are probably as annoyed as you Laugh

Quote:2. The kid-hater. Always whining about kids and such. Makes you wonder why they are a teacher in the first place.

I agree. They make my blood boil. They're the particular ones that I've stood up to in the past.

Quote:3.

I definitely call these teachers out when I can. I avoid being embarrassed and proven wrong by picking apart what looks like a loophole before I say anything. Definitely not in a "know-it-all" tone in case I'm still wrong, cause that's just annoying.

Quote:4. Homework-loving teachers. Self-Explanatory

Teachers may or may not have a homework quota "just to get a grade in." The ones with nightly homework that takes hours are the bane of my existence.

Quote:5. Test-loving teachers. (A.K.A my Spanish teacher) Even worse than the homework lovers. Hands out a test/quiz every week. Makes you wonder if they have a fetish for seeing other peoples' anxiety.

Definitely "to get a grade in" to please the administration. If it's a lower-level foreign language class it's also to get everyone's grades high to make it look like they're a good teacher.

Worst types of teachers

Worst type of teacher I've had:

The teacher who loves the popular kids, but hates the rest of us.

My experience with one of these teachers occurred in 6th grade. My art teacher, Mrs. Tucker (33rd on The List) always loved the popular kids, like always posting on the walls on My Big Campus (a school version of a social network) of the popular students. Basically that was a group of about 10 people who always hanged out with Mrs. Tucker during recess. She gave me misery on day 4 in my school's rotation (my school had "specials" every day, which alternated every day).

Another kind of teacher: The teacher who drinks way too much coffee.

This teacher is all right later in the day, but it isn't for me first thing in the morning. I'm too tired in his class to do anything. He also made my favorite class in 6th grade (science) into that class I dread and made my 2nd period class my favorite (band, it is awesome plus I don't have to deal with Scotty. Scotty is what I call my science teacher, because I hate him that much). He also is loved by everybody else, so everybody gets defensive about him when I say he sucks. Even my best friend who doesn't have him for science. My mom also met him at parent-teacher conferences and she said that "he's the nicest teacher ever". Fuck that shit. I put my headphones on while listening to music in homeroom (allowed) and he screams, "Ed, put those in your locker!". I drink a whole thing of Mio Energy to get me through a test (and it makes me perform better in class) and he says, "Ed, put that in your locker!". He doesn't realize that I am actually trying to be better in his class by drinking a whole thing of Mio Energy. He also now gives me a demerit for every time I borrow a fucking PENCIL! That was after I stole around 50, but still. Oh, another thing. Everybody thinks he is a good rapper (they clearly haven't listened to rap before) when he fails as a rapper. We also root for rival sports teams (He goes for Detroit teams, I go for Cleveland teams, minus the Browns (Steelers fan))

Here is a link for Mr. Krueger's rap fail (sorry for the bad camera angles, but it was my 1st time): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxFJm8G3FF4

The music was pre-recorded from a concert that the band performed a few nights earlier. I'm one of like 10 who are playing for most of the song.

Worst types of teachers

Take a side.

I'm not a big fan of neutrality in some circumstances. Being a bit radical means I don't like the whole "Yeh I get the problem but I don't care much about fixing it enough to do anything so I'll support you emotionally but that's about it. Now let's get back to that 100 question multiple choice test."

Plus we know teachers have influence. Just look at those unions. When it comes to them, it's all "hell hath no fury like a teacher scorned".
