RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

It's too bad that your dad seems to have only been given information fed to him without examining it.

Oh wow, you got caught on SS?
What I have to say is that the American high school is a completely different beast from the 80s-90s, and I can go as to why, even if the basic model is the same. The most important thing is that students are disengaged from learning more than ever, and the advancement of technology shows that learning outside a typical classroom is possible.

I don't recall that you can be suspended for wearing a shirt like mine in a high school in 1994.

If your dad hasn't thought that school has gotten worse since he left, I would highly recommend him to ask him to go to public school for a day and see how long he lasts before he runs out the door. Such subjective thinking is screwing parents over. "Back in my day, I had to research things using textbooks and shit." Word of advice, we are connected to electronics 24-7, and we also go to school 24-7, so we know how bad school is compared to parents "glory days", so you can't say shit about our generation and the problems many adolescents experience throughout their life.

My dad thinks this site is putting bullshit in my head
The thing is, school in many ways has gotten worse, but it always was bad for many, many kids -- including me. I would have done badly at any school, but I went to a high-pressure academic high school. My friends never really thought I was dummer than they were, but they didn't really understand why i did badly. (Nor do I really. I dont' understand people who can be interested in anything a teacher puts in front of them and learn in whatever way the teacher chose! They are just a mystery to me.)
So what I think is happening in your dad's head is that maybe he found school to be easy, and thinks it should be easy for you, too.
I have a blog post that he might find interesting....http://mindsofkids.blogspot.com/2012/05/12-most-critical-reasons-why-we-cant-go.html

RE: My dad thinks this site is putting bullshit in my head
It's still a problem but when I was in school the atmosphere was much more racist, homophobic, classist, and ableist. Your generation still has problems but we were horribly cruel and stupid. When I see how accepting my students are of each others differences I know we've come a long long way.
The institution of public education has gotten both better and worse. We were far more free. We had an hour for lunch, we could leave campus, the teachers turned a blind eye to all kinds of craziness. We had fun. Your generation is much more locked down by rules. In my state we didn't have any state mandated testing. You just passed your class and moved on. On the other hand, a lot of advancements have been made concerning teaching people with disabilities. But the worst thing about schools today is there's so much more anger. Teachers yell a lot. Students yell back. It's become much more adversarial and aggressive on both sides. Even the students (and teachers) who aren't angry are still being exposed to anger everyday and that's bad for your health and development.
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

RE: My dad thinks this site is putting bullshit in my head
I believe one of HS teachers took a job at some poverty area HS where teachers pretty much walk around in bulletproof vests, and there are always 3 teachers per class.
Its like a place 1 above juvie...
He went though because he needed the money. Surprising though is the guy is a lawyer but I guess his field was in recession so he went into teaching history, which was something he also studied for.
Damn shame. The guy was a great teacher.

RE: My dad thinks this site is putting bullshit in my head
I'd rather be in a pre-911/Columbine high school, probably around 1994-1998. I probably won't get suspended for doodling a stick figure with a gun back then.

I doodled lots of guns, tanks and dying stick figures(can't learn to draw if you don't practice drawing it).
I guess being a well-liked, high grade, favoritized student at a private school saved me from the whole "omg u is psycho killer in the making"

Show him some of these sites:

In other words, regardless of school being worse or not now, it was bad in the 1980s-1990s. Maybe make that point?

well I mainly drew guns and stuff. I sucked at drawing living beings.

RE: My dad thinks this site is putting bullshit in my head
Oh lord, I'm having flashbacks.
My dad was all up in my goodies about SS back when I first joined. I'm 21 now and well out of school but I joined when I was still in middle school back in the 7th grade and my father did not like it. He wanted to know what I was posting, and eventually ended up asking for my password so he could monitor my activity. I refused but he actually joined the site himself just so he could see what I was posting. I ended up making a second account as a sockpuppet under a different name and let everyone know it was me on you know where since he didn't have access to it. I joined as "Apocalipto" but chose "Thought Criminal" as sort of a secret middle finger to my dad.
I don't know the specifics of your situation hopefully your parents aren't some Evangelical whack jobs, my sympathies if they are. My Dad just kind of dropped it after a while. I think he realized how much of dick he was being, probably thanks to my mom talking some reason into him.
I hope things work out okay for you bro! I know how it feels, it gets better though, trust me.

Same with my brother who's in 6th grade. He gets straight A's which doesn't help at all with my parents' thoughts.
It sort of, I don't know, psychologically makes my parents increase their expectations of me, I know they say they don't expect straight A's but they sort of kiss up on my brother because of the fact that he gets straight A's. I don't want to ruin my brother's grades in school, so I'm trying not to change him at all even though I feel like I should, my brother's a very bright kid, he's got similar interests to me, and we are brothers and because of that we are very close. I mean I got similar grades in his grade, so he could possibly make the transition, but I just feel like my parents think he's brighter than me because he got higher grades than I did when I was his age. It's really frustrating and it's just a negative factor of grades.
