RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

A Rant Against AVID.

At the beginning of the year I decided to take this class. I was told it would help me with my organization. I was shocked to find out what it really is.

AVID is a college-readiness class.

My teacher for the class is all-in-your-face about grades. She obsesses about us and gives us worksheets where we have to track our grades on. I know that the AVID Board probably wants her to do that..

A big one at that.

The AVID board wants us to take Cornell Notes. This class makes us take notes the same way, not respecting our individuality and differences. This is a one-size-fits-all learning mechanism that turns us into branded drones who take notes the same way and during the progress of writing Cornell Notes we waste unneeded time on notes. If we take notes that we understand, why do we need to write questions, main ideas, and a summary?

Above is an example of a blank Cornell Notes paper; Sure it works for some people, but not everyone.

Meaningless papers are another reason why AVID sucks.

Every year we have to make trifolds on a college, and we have to write essays on a career and statistics about it.
Every marking period we have to do these Goal Setting Outlines.

Are the "goals" not going to be the same every time?
You would think that the "goal" every time you write this paper would be "getting my grades up".
Is it a coincidence that the acronym is Goal Plan Action?
I think not.

We also have to do these tutorials every once in a while.

What we do is we ask a question on paper, we have to fill out what we know about it, and ask a level 2 or 3 thinking question (I will get to this later) on the paper about out Point Of Confusion. After this, we get into groups and everyone would present their question and Point Of Confusion, and we have to take notes (I have no idea why we have to take notes) and a tutor in the group writes notes for the person presenting. While I do believe this is a great idea in logic, they made it way too complicated.

For those of you wondering what the level 2 or 3 thinking questions are, here is an example:

Feeling sick? It sure makes me sick.
The motto for AVID is:

"AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all
students for college readiness and success in a global society."

COLLEGE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.
..I mean come on, really!

This is more like turning everyone into grade-obsessive robots and lifeless drones who desperately try to raise their robotic class rank and GPA, that being all they worry about.

DO NOT JOIN AVID OR ANYTHING RELATED TO IT! IT IS A COMMON CORE INFESTED PIECE OF JUNK! DON'T LET THEM BRAINWASH YOU INTO THINKING THAT IT'S HELPFUL. IT WILL STRIP YOU FROM YOUR INDIVIDUALITY AND MAKE YOU A WORK DRONE! DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP LIKE I DID.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention we have to write our assignments in our agendas or we get no credit, and we have to have our binders the way the teacher wants us to or we will get no credit.

overall it's just mind boggling

A Rant Against AVID.

My thought is that I have absolute no concern for grades, only about having a more enriching learning experience. School already fails to do so.

Also Have you heard about this idea called, "Stress free productivity"? It's actually quite helpful for my productivity.

Wow That really sucks for you, being suck in that situation. Taking away things you cherish in order for them to get what they want. Its quite manipulative if you think about it.

My Dad always threatens to call the cops or authority figures in order to get me working in school, fear as an incentive to work is always a false assumption about teens and kids. It's a huge disrespect.

RE: A Rant Against AVID.

We had a whole bunch of college readiness exercises.

Makes me wonder whether the teachers actually ever went to college. Aint nothing about college that uptight or complicated. Make such a big issue about it when it really isnt...

A Rant Against AVID.

I love how high school will pump you up so hard, and then when you get to college, you're like "what the hell? I suffered all that mental anguish and it's nothing like my highschool said?"

Then proceed to get drunk.

My college has had some issue with drunk freshmen. The chicks don't seem to know that being small and light means their body can hold only so much alcohol, and they go off and challenge some big guy to a drinking contest. Biologically speaking, the man will win guarantee simply due to the fact that he has a whole lot more mass and such(there may be exceptions for some reasons, but generally speaking). End up either passed out or in the hospital getting stomach pumped.

Maybe high school should focus a bit less on academics, and a bit more on common sense. Like a 100Ib 5'3 chick will not stand up against a 240Ib 6'2 male in a drinking contest.(My poli-theory prof is also part of a committee to improve the college and stuff, and after the final she brought up some topics to gauge our opinions and criticisms. So this first comes to mind)

The thing about college in America is that unless you have a HUGE scholarship, you are practically paying thousands of dollars to follow your dreams.

There are some countries in Europe that have free colleges, but you pay taxes for it.

A Rant Against AVID.

Europe is different. Taxes are high but social services are extensive. The government also appears to keep the costs of a college education down for it's populace, to the extent that some areas have free colleges(for citizens).

In America however, the pure corporate capitalist system dominates. The more you pay, the more you get. Of course those who decide the "pay" part don't have to keep it proportional to what is provided, especially if they're a private group primarily seeking profits. The entire system is like that. You pay to apply, pay to get in, pay to stay in, pay when you get out, and on top of this you also pay interest(aka scum-tax because interest is literally money they want without rendering any service for the cost of the interest. For student loans, the interest rate is pretty insane...)

You aren't a student in America, you're an investment. If you fail, they'll squeeze out what they can;If you pass, they'll squeeze out what they can(and more).
