RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Video project

I need to make a video for my class. He said it can pretty much be whatever we want, but there has to be some kind of editing shown or a point to it (for example, you can't just film a fish swimming around and call it a video) and it has to be "school appropriate".

I don't want to speak in it. If I film at home, I'm on my own because I'm not allowed to have people over, and there's no one here who will help me. If I film at school, I might be able to get a couple people to help me, but my time will be limited to my lunch period.

Also, he said I can't film myself playing video games because I've already done that.

Do what those weird amateur directors do. Film cars on the street, then some train tracks, then pan upwards to the sky. Edit by making it that near colorless "yellow" tinged style. Add some sad music.

Voila.

^ That's...actually not a bad idea. A faux-philosophical video of that variety would fit the bill, even if it doesn't actually mean anything.

I once saw a 10 min video that was literally a silent movie with some barely-audible background ambiance that revolved around following a dog walking on train tracks in black and white.

Not sure what it was supposed to be out...

Got my final project for this class due tomorrow, same criteria. Any more ideas would be appreciated.

Also, I can't leave the house this time.

Can you capture video from a Hangout with others on School Survival? I bet some here would be open to that, speaking about their thoughts on school or something. A number of us have been trying to figure out how to edit videos together based on School Survival themes.

I think that could still be school-appropriate.

Also, can you edit in clips from talks, along with other footage? That's what I've been thinking of doing.

I think that's a good idea. At the moment, I don't know how I would edit that, but I'll have time to figure it out.

It's too late for me to do it tonight, but I'll ask the teacher if I can hand it in next class, and we can figure out a time to do the Hangout.

Just get something passable like Windows Movie Maker or hell, even shit like iMovie and/or Kate's Video Toolkit will do.

I could do the editing at school with what they have, but I just don't know how I would get the footage from the hangout into the video. If someone put it on youtube or something I would be able to.
