RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Arcade

Have you ever been to an arcade?
What did you think about it?

Why did arcades go away?
What would make one successful?
What would make you want to go to an arcade?

I remember spending countless quarters on games like Metal Slug and Turtles in Time. I know it's kind of a hassle to keep running to the change machine to get more quarters. I know that a quarter is a lot of money for one life.

What would be a better system?

If there was an arcade in my area with 90s games (especially a Neo Geo MVS with KOF 96 and/or KOF 99) I'd be all over dat shit.

I was born too late.

Imagine a scenario in which you only want to play a few games for one platform.
Does it really make sense to spend five- or six-hundred dollars to play those games?

PC. Multifunctionality FTW.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

I completely agree. Quarters in arcades get used up way too fast, and the whole thing ends up being a ripoff.

There's got to be a better way.

Arcade

But anyways, here are my serious rambling thoughts on the matter. (part 1)

Quote:Have you ever been to an arcade?
Yes and no. I've been to plenty of barcades and seen arcade cabinets featured as a side attraction at rest stops and the like (hello Daytona USA), but I haven't been in an honest to God arcade. However, I would love to visit one of the legitimate ones in Japan, like Taito HEY, Club Sega, or Ebi-cen.

Quote:What did you think about it?
Honestly, back when I went to those places, I didn't have an appreciation of what makes the arcade experience special, crap games were stocked, and I didn't bother playing much. I think I've only played once or twice on an actual arcade cabinet in my life, and honestly, that disturbs me more then it should.

Quote:Why did arcades go away?
(part 2)
This is a very complicated question to ask. Honestly, I think it's due to a number of interconnected factors. Let's start with mindset. In the US and Europe, most players (unless they were budget strapped or challenge whores), decided to credit feed everything. As a result, arcades got an un-deserved reputation as quarter munchers and the games became not nearly as enjoyable as they should have been. Thus, when consoles became comparable to arcade hardware in terms of processing power, control interfaces, etc., this demographic quickly abandoned the arcades in favor of the interactive movies and cheap, easy games that consoles offered. And with that, arcades became desperate, favoring unusual spectacle over actual good games and decent mindsets, arcades died out in the United States and Europe (for the most part). Now Japan, China, South Korea, and SE Asia is another story entirely, and I intend to cover it in a follow-up post. But for now, that's enough of my rambling thoughts on this question.

Arcade

Quote:What would make one successful?
(part 3)
Nothing short of a dramatic change in mindset from the average gamer. This is where Japan comes in. Japan, with it's unique combination of hyperurbanized environment and challenge-seeking players, has seen the arcades not only not die, but flourish despite the odds. Until the concept of the 1CC becomes appealing to the average player, and games designed to accomodate that concept (shmups, etc.) proliferate, then the kinds of arcades I like will never happen in America.

Quote:What would make you want to go to an arcade?
1CC atmosphere and great games. Biggrin (hell, I'd like to manage an arcade myself if nothing else)

Quote:What would be a better system?
Aye, now there's the rub. I honestly think that nothing can exceed a proper arcade as an exciting, terrifying, thrilling environment for gaming. But that said, MAME helps placate me in the meantime, some independent Japanese developers (think Yotsubane, etc.) are making games that comply with the arcade-styled norms (heavy challenge, 1CC, etc.), and quite a few arcade-styled games make their ways to consoles as well (although not in the friendliest form possible, damn you Microsoft Japan).

In my day we played pinball in KISS and AC/DC t-shirts. Then Space Invaders and punk rock took it to a whole new level. We used to meet up in the arcade and then go hang out in the woods getting into all kinds of good (bad) stuff.

You forgot the PC part of that as well.... And also you do realize how hard Emulation is...especially when there is little documentation on the hardware itself, and with the low amount of Worth-While not-on-pc games, it's simply not worth it...although again there are a few that are working on it...

Quote:Also, what about Xbox 360, Xbox One, or PS4?
Xbox 360 - Going along about as good as the PS3 Emulation IIRC, excluding a few issues I think.

Xbox One/PS4 it will be a few years prior to even basic emulation being ready, albeit since they use the x86_64 Architecture(IIRC), it shouldn't be as long as the PS3's Emulation. Although again I'd say wait about 2-5 years before anything becomes remotely ready in the field of Emulation for the Xbone and the Potato Station 4 to actually get anywhere notable.

You seem to think that Emulation is something that's easy, when in fact it's not, especially since Emulators are done for free as well. Also use common sense, if it's taken several years to get PS3 emulation to where it is, it may take that long, or longer, to get the next 'gen' of consoles emulate-able.

Actually, this is just me wording things the way PC Gamers put it into my mind: They word it in a way that makes it sound like I'm gonna be able to emulate PS4 at 9 FPS next year.

You seem to be missing the more obvious question. Why would I want to emulate a PS4, other then for shock value and to get SCEA's lawyers on my tail? I have much better things to play, hell, much better things to emulate then a goddamn PS4 of all things. And this is doubly true for the Xbox One.

Actually there's a place in my town called, Lanes, Trains, and Automobiles. It has Bumper Cars, Laser Tag, Bowling, and an arcade(I think you can get food too), however they use a card-based system, you put money on a card they give you(kinda like a debit-card), and you can use it for whatever you need(except bowling IIRC), the only downside is the money is non-refundable, so you won't get the money back. It's actually somewhat popular, at least with Elementary-Middle School Students, not with High School Students it seems :/
