RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Getting up for school

At 6:30 in the morning the skies are dark as hell and waking up when the sun hasn't even risen yet, is the most depressing part of my day. It's so comfortable and soothing to sleep in my little toasty bed. Getting up leaves me exhausted as all hell. I soothe my exhaustion with a mixture of tea, Coffee and juice and mix it all together and gulp it down. It taste like shit, but it keeps me awake. I then eat a bowl of porridge, you have to add other stuff like sugar and milk to make it taste better, but I have no fucking time to enjoy a breakfast. I get dressed up, brush my teeth and pack my backpack; thirty minutes i'm off to school.

Getting up for school

I remember I hated doing this. Hating school made waking up in the morning even worse. I'm so glad I don't have to do this and so glad I don't have to go to school anymore. I actually had to wake up earlier because it took me so long to get ready.

Edit: Lol unedited post was in the wrong thread...

Wow, lucky. I latest I was able to wake up was during the middle school years and that was around 7:30am to 7:45am, although that 15 to 30min diff really isn't much when you think about it. Cries

You aren't alone.

It's a lot worse when your house isn't heated, though. At least I get some decent cereal, fried eggs, and tea.

Getting up for school

I always hated waking up at 6:45 in the morning to go to prison. I put on my bland uniform and work with the faceless people for 8 hours and learn nothing. I have no rights, I'm forced to go without any of my consent, and I have even more debts at the end of the day. Soon I'll be a freedman at the age of 18 and boy will I enjoy trying to abolish legal slavery.

Getting up for school

It's clear that waking up early for school fucking sucks. Even my friends who are the epitome of the perfect white middle class christian family and perfect students. You know perfect attendance, amazing grades, amazing resume, amazing participation. Yet they hate waking up. The most pathetic argument I heard,
"Yeah, but later in life students will have to wake up earlier, this is simply to prepare them."
My conclusion is simple wear over something over our heads.

Getting up for school

yeah,so I guess Wake Me Up When September Ends is right?sigh~we have to wake up early in china too, actually I don't think that is too bad,the really bad thing is you have to be concentrate and awake during the class ,and you really want to take a nap,but the teacher will see you fall asleep, and that couldn't be allowed.then you become awake and fall asleep and awake again and fall asleep again.THAT IS AWFUL.Anyway I hope my previous life could be an American so I could easily pass the next English exam.so good night friend ,my name is 徐然,hope some greenday lyrics would be help and comfortable~

Summer has come and passed
The innocence can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Very true. There's an entire movement, including doctors, who agree:

Start School Later

I encourage everyone to show that site to parents, other students, teachers, administrators, therapists, siblings, and people on the street and see what they think... and maybe see if they'd be open to learning about the scientific evidence.

Even Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education, has tweeted support for later start times. This is one of many things where there's a huge gap between conversations that are going on, and the reality so many students have to deal with in school.

Depends on the person... and if the goal is to prepare them for life, there are better ways than making them suffer through a bunch of mind-numbing routines. At least later in life they'll have a reason to get up early, if they need to, and the option of finding a different kind of work schedule... especially in the 21st century.

(And even the typical "9 to 5" job schedule starts at 9... however many millions of jobs start at different times or have flexible schedules.)

Getting up for school

I shared this thread in the StuVoice FB group (link.)

If anyone else is in there or wants to join, feel free to jump into the discussion.

This is an issue that might actually be something to push for change on in your schools. The Start School Later Success Stories section has a lot of examples.

"If you think it's too hard to return schools to later, healthier hours, here's a sampling of schools in 43 states that have done it already or are doing it in the next school year. While some of these schedules aren't ideal, they all give students a chance for healthier sleep than the typical American middle or high school.

Hundreds of communities across the USA - and beyond - have found ways to make this happen by prioritizing health and learning. Below we feature schools that have come to our attention."

That gives me an idea... maybe SS should have a "success stories" section. Smile
