RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I just have to rant again

Man, I just need to rant. OK, so my VI teacher wrote me up for something even a criminal wouldn't be in trouble for. Not answering her questions. It started with an incident this friday. I was sleeping in class, and just couldn't wake up. They tried to wake me up, and I didn't respond. Because I had done this many times my VI teacher, not sure what else to do, decided to write me up. How ridiculous! Simply because I won't answer you? Seriously? If I don't want to answer you, that's it, I have the right to not answer you. Yet she thinks because I'm not a criminal, this somehow doesn't apply. I'm just outraged. I can't believe that teachers right people up for the most ridiculous things, and, there's no restrictions! I have a problem with the way she reacted, it was way overboard for the situation. I didn't say fuck you to her, I didn't attack her, I didn't even call anyone a name, yet she writes me up anyway? That just shows that she really runs out of ideas quickly.

I went home that day, though, because I was sleeping.

That's messed up. Were you really tired that day?

"I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing."-Neil Gaimen

Yeah, very tired that day. Yet they aren't very understanding.

RE: I just have to rant again

I got in trouble with my principal a few years ago for letting students sleep. Your teacher probably got (most likely informally) reprimanded for having disengaged students. Has your school actually worked your referral yet? If so what are your consequences? Your teacher might know the referral won't be worked or your consequence will be very light but has decided to write you up anyway so if they hassle her for students sleeping in her class she can provide documentation that she took specific action to prevent your behavior but didn't get backed up by admin which allows her to at least some degree put the ball back in their court. Most likely, you're just being used as a pawn. Frankly, most teachers love for students to sleep because it's about as low stress as it gets.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

My teacher had said, if you're feeling tired, we can't have you here. You need to stay home. Yet dad doesn't understand that.

It might be a bluff on her part. I've done that.

Actually, didn't go to school today, so I really can't be sure what will happen.

RE: I just have to rant again

Your dad probably doesn't want you around the house all day when there's free daycare available. Once you're at school you're someone else's problem.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.
