RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Linux is better than Windows 7, but I like Windows 7 better

Remember a while back when I posted that I switched to Lucid Puppy? Well....two days later, I started using Windows 7 (NT 6.1) again. Well, before that, I also tried Linux Mint and Slax. But I still liked Windows better.

I'm not gonna go on about how Windows NT is better than Linux because it's not; Windows NT is a memory hog (I'll even admit that XP was when it came out) to both RAM and Hard Disk, it's slow, it's insecure (although that is in part due to how popular Windows is,) and it costs money. Linux is efficient, fast, secure, and not only free, but open-source.

So why do I like Windows better? It comes down to one thing: I like the idea of executable files that I can find on my computer and put anywhere I want better than packages that need to stay in one place. I couldn't even find where the files (but I know they were somewhere, I just should have looked harder.) Personally, I feel it just makes my computer feel more organized. Plus, I couldn't get any application that didn't come from a repository to work.

That is honestly my only reason. Sure, there's my issue with Mint barely working, or Puppy's GUI feeling like a 9 year old made it, but that was honestly the only reason that applies to Linux in general.

So there, that's my opinion on Linux.

Lolwut. Executables just install shit elsewhere, usually. I use slack and generally compile everything and install by hand. I store all the tarballs in the same directory. Basically the same. Or you could use .deb files for debian. Or package manager installation files for any distro, really.

Linux is better than Windows 7, but I like Windows 7 better

I really, really like Linux. If it was less effort to get all my stuff to work and be organized exactly how I like, I would just switch all my computers over to it.

The other day I just switched my netbook from Fuduntu (I really loved that OS, despite the stability issues) to Windows 7... just because of the convenience of running my portable apps off the SD card directly, and some other Windows things I really wanted to use on it, but I would have to manually compile to get to work on Linux. Can't be arsed...

Linux home folders are still a way better idea than the Windows registry, at least. But I still prefer having programs and their settings in the same folder structure.

Supposedly Mint has finally eclipsed Windows in that regard. I've always gamed with Windows though, with Mint on dual-boot. I'm gonna give gaming with Mint a go in about month after I replace some essential and now ruined parts on my PC and update you guys on how it goes.

RE: Linux is better than Windows 7, but I like Windows 7 better

I played all of fallout via Wine, so it's not like it's unusable.

Linux isn't inherently worse at gaming than windows, it's literally just the fact that game companies don't normally port to Linux. Which is annoying since the development is done on linux machines a lot...

Any games ported to linux or written specifically for it work great ime. There's also sometimes problems with driver support for cards, but that's usually negligible with proprietary driver installation. Kind of a pain, but if the alternative is abandoning linux...

I don't really play games though.

I don't like Windows 8, or 8.1. AND BEFORE anyone tries to say I need to try it. I have, I used both for a period of time and concluded that I didn't like using it.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

RE: Linux is better than Windows 7, but I like Windows 7 better

It's almost like an opinion

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.
