RIP School Survival Forums

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Considering Homeschool or Unschooling. Need advice
I've just started the new school year and already I've been having so many problems. I feel so worked up. I can't relax at home or on weekends because all I think about is school and how bad it'll be. I'm either skipping class, going for half of the day and sometimes I just say "fuck it!" and stay home. Just walking up to the building stresses me out. I don't like the kids, either. I hate when you have to do group assignments and all that shit because I'm forced to talk to some stupid dickhead. I don't really have anybody to talk to in my classes and sitting there alone makes me feel uncomfortable. And don't get me wrong, I don't really have problems talking with people. I'm little bit of an introvert but I don't have many problems being social and I find talking to people to be easy and I think it's great getting to know different people and building relationships. I feel like I've come a long way in terms of past social problems and I've really overcome a lot of obstacles. Now I socialize quite a bit outside but when I'm in school, I don't feel right and I find it harder to do so. I've already switched 3 schools in the past and I haven't liked one. It's difficult adjusting. The problem is, this is my senior year but it's been the most difficult. I feel like I won't be able to make it and that I won't get my diploma. So, I've done some research and I've been reading up on Homeschooling and Unschooling and though it seems like it'd be a good idea but it looks like there are a shitload of religious nutjobs and that really turns me off to the idea. Just reading some of their opinions makes me feel like they're indoctrinating their kids in similar ways the traditional system does. What I want out of this is the freedom to learn individually, at my own pace so I can get my High School diploma. I know homeschooling isn't inherently a religious clusterfuck and only some people use it that way but it still gives me an iffy feeling. I guess what I'm asking is for some advice. What should I do? Should I go this route? And how about your experiences? Any atheist/agnostics here do or have done homeschooling/unschooling and what was that like for you? I'd like some ideas because I can't take the school environment anymore. Nobody should feel this stressed out about anything.

Welcome to School Survival. I'm DoA, resident activist and opponent of the Department of Education's very existence. Pleased to meet you.
Well, how it works for each homeschooler depends entirely on their parents, though parents generally have to accept a bunch of government regulations (as to curricula and whatnot) in order to be permitted to homeschool their kids. Many parents do indeed inculcate preferred beliefs in their children, often for the sake of religion, as public schools do not "offer" religious indoctrination. The question is, would you be willing to have your parents educate you instead...and would they be willing to do so?
There are other alternatives to the traditional school environment - if you're tech-savvy and hate crowds, there's always online schooling (though I find it also has its problems...), for instance.
I know what you mean, by the way. Schooling isn't education; it's suffering.

My parents are pretty open minded. I would prefer having one of them teach me over a teacher and if I talk to them about it, I'm sure they'd be open to the idea. I'm not sure about online school. I'd have to give that one a little bit of thought though.
Another thing, where I live, we have a public and catholic school system both publicly funded so the religious indoctrination is available through a traditional school setting. Since Catholic schools over here are just as mainstream as the public ones and a large amount of kids attend them, I don't know if that would have any effect on how many religious to non-homeschooling there would be as, well you know, there's a mainstream alternative.

Makes sense. Unless your parents are highly religious, you won't have to bother with Catholicism or whatnot if you homeschool.
Good luck finding an alternative to public school; it's an environment that seems to be becoming more toxic to a growing number of individuals, and worth getting away from if you can find a viable counter-method of education.

Yeah, they're not so it won't be a problem. I hope I can start this soon because I know if I do, it'll make my senior year a lot easier. I won't dread waking up in the morning anymore.
