RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

a good analogy for the public school system

Here's a good analogy for the school system. Think of it as a van. The problem is, that van is old, rusty broken down, and is experiencing many problems. Yet the owner just says, it needs a new engine? Just get a new one. Brake problem? Just get new brakes. Steering wheel is falling off? just get a new one. Problem is, in the end, you still have that old van, it's still broken and rusty, and it'll still have problems. But what if you threw that van off a 70 foot cliff and got a new one? Problem solved! That's what we are doing with schools today. We just patch and patch away, but don't get a new system entirely. So, problems just keep coming up, because we still have the same system. Thoughts?

People are lazy..they just react to problems instead of actually solving them. It's a good analogy. It is infuriating how nobody really cares about the children and teens, choosing instead to ignore the problems. Grrr.

Don't play chess with pigeons-they'll just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut about like they won anyway.

Yes, people just ignore teens instead of listening. Have you noticed? Most but not all of the ss members happen to be teens. Seems like as soon as people get into 7th or 8th grade, they realize that are the crap they're learning will never help them in the end.

RE: a good analogy for the public school system

The van analogy is a good one, but it does not capture the darker essence of school. It is more like a lumbering Frankenstein robot. It sucks in children like a vacuum cleaner and parents become deaf to the sounds of their own children screaming from inside.

The robot is made out of people whose life is sustained by the money they get for claiming to teach children when it is the children that actually learn. If the robot sees you as a threat to its source of life giving power (money), it will crush you.

It would be nice if everyone could see the danger of the robot and act to disassemble it. However, the most that happens is some people are successful in getting the robot made larger.

You want to weep for the children consumed by the robot and made into little robots themselves who are compliant and help defend the robot. Since the robot cannot be defeated, the best you can do is find ways to flee and escape its clutches.

Like a man unjustly imprisoned, it is possible to finish the sentence and attempt to build a normal life. However, the robot usually leaves scars of one kind or another.

After school, you begin to learn that there are other robots like the government robot, the various corporation robots, and even a few church robots. You learn that the school robot was designed to change you so that you would fit into the other robots.

At some point even those who can see the robot for what it is end up surrendering to the robot. However, it is possible to live on the fringe. To live in a rural area, homeschool, or have you own business,or even house church.

It is almost as if our country has been invaded and we now live under the heel of an oppressive tyrant. We can live as a network of underground agents offering encouragement and support of each other.

Thank you! This is something I've been trying to say for the longest time.

The antiquated Prussian (disciplinarian) model of education is still in use in many of the world's schools today, and no reform, no matter how drastic - even if, by some miracle, we could make school non-compulsory - will eliminate the flaws inherent in that model. We must replace our rusty, failing system of schooling with a new one entirely.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

Fledging democracies adopting the education system of a nation better known as "an Army with a State".

It's like learning human rights from Spartans.

It needs to be destroyed and not replaced at all. Public school is like an old broken down van... that has the soul of America's youth duct taped in the back.

Apologies to non-Americans, I'm just sticking to what I know.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.
