RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

So today was....awesome

So I can't believe it, today was actually awesome at school...and I'm looking forward to school Monday/Wednesday/Friday of next week.

Why? Because I have made school a bit interesting. You see I have always wanted to go to a LAN party, and participate in one. I've thought about seeing if I could host one at school possibly during a pep rally, but I digress. I also have Computer Programming and Logic I at the end of the day and we have a bit of free time near the end, and today we got about 40 or so minutes of free time(came in handy as well so I could figure out what to fucking do Razz). I also own a copy of Doom 2(It's the Windows 95 port), Zandronum, and an USB Drive.

So since I noticed this I thought, "It would be cool to have a class LAN party thingy..." and I made a plan with this one guy to play Doom 2 today(although he was absent) on Wednesday(My school runs on a block schedule). Any-who today comes around and I see that another friend is there(we have the same lunch) so during that lunch I approach him on the idea and he agrees, once we get into the room I talk to another friend of mine whom also agrees. I set it up on their computers(but not on mine), and class begins, then at about 2:00 CDT/CST, the teacher decides to give us free time and not really do anything(even though we have about 40 minutes). She decides to let us play student made games and stuff(even though they aren't very good), however I mess around with Doom 2, DoomSeeker, and Zandronum until around 2:30 I finally get it to work, I hurriedly move to my other friend's computer and set him up and start the game.

After a few minutes of playing the teacher says, "That doesn't look like a student made game" to which the other students move to my computer(one of my friends is sitting right next to me as well so they are around mine and his computer), and are somewhat amazed, when they ask the name of the game I reply, "Doom 2." When asked how I got it to work I said honestly to them, and they watched. The game was fun, even though it was 2 against one(me and a friend on one team the other friend on the other), and it was a Capture the Flag Match. The teacher does say, "You should probably get off of that" to which I simply reply, "I know." (My friend next to me has his ear-buds in so he can't really hear her). We continue playing with other people watching, I die a few times, although my team ends up winning. Afterwards I talk to some of the people watching and told them next time I can set it up on their computers so you can join, to which they reply yes.

Any-who it seems like I got something started in the class (which I had planned, but it sort of grew naturally and I didn't expect it to really grow, had the teacher not pointed it out, no one would have watched or found out or a smaller amount would have). Also I expect to have about 4-5 students joining the game next time. The game it self is theoretically playable anywhere in the school(at least in the main building at the least). I might get in trouble Monday, since the AUP doesn't really let you play games(technically, I could get away with it) although they only have the server ran on my account, and nothing else(other than the teachers word) the only other students are the other two whom played, and they are the only ones with copies on their computer, and it is stored locally as well...

So yeah tl;dr I made school interesting with a Doom 2 CTF LAN game during the last period of the day.

I plan on making a guide later.

So today was....awesome

Wow. That is awesome.

Back in my freshman year of high school, me and two other guys used a computer lab during a lunch period to set up a RuneScape clan. Two of us had to use two computers (and accounts) at once in order to bypass the "five people needed" restriction. We never did anything even remotely cool with school computers since.

It's similar to my school, with the student apps folder. Someone put minecraft in one of the folders.

Though not as awesome as your work Chanku, I've also found a way to pass the time in my school as well.

I created a sentence game. Basically, you write one sentence, and then you pick a word from it. You use that same word in a new sentence, pick another word, repeat, and when you use up the page, you round up all the words you picked and construct some kind of sentence/paragraph/story with all the words included.

Dang. I wish I could do that sort of thing.....but the school computers have the ability to download blocked.

I set everything up at home, and then took it to school on a USB drive(although Zandronum, DoomSeeker, and MediaFire are unblocked).

Halo: one of the best video games in history. EVER. I can't play Halo 3 or Reach online because my Xbox 360's ethernet port broke down sometime last summer so I've been using my laptop and playing Halo: CE online. I've had this game since like 2006, too. I love playing on the zombie servers. They're hella fun.

I can't wait for the MCC to come out because I have faith it'll reinvigorate the Halo community. I doubt I'll be able to get it though because of my dad. Cries

We have student shared files at our school, and occasionally that sort of thing gets posted.

The one game that everyone at our school used to use was TagPro. We would set up group games during classes. Of course, eventually people stopped being discreet and the site was blocked...after that, any other breakthroughs were kept secret (such as PutLocker and ZeroTunnel, the latter of which was recently blocked).

I'm personally jealous that you have a programming class at school. The programming class at school that I have is called "Tech Ed." It mixes wood-shop, web design, and Photoshop (separate class).

Sad thing is, it only teaches web design to 7th graders, and it teaches the very basic of web design and the very basic of computers. I feel envious that you have a programming class this year and I do not.

This is even more awesome because it's 2014... retro games FTW.

Back in mah day, we played Quake 2 on the school computers... which is newer... what is this time travel madness?!

Short update: We played today, but the teacher made us stop(system uses LAN School, which allows teachers to control student computers). Apparently the school had once threatened an entire class of her's with ISS overplaying a game on the computers(much like we were)

I should have clarified; your teacher, having previously been threatened by the administration over the actions of an earlier class, did not want the same threat to be issued to the current one. Does your class share her concerns, I mean?

I believe they do. However it's more of the fact that most students don't want to risk getting in trouble at this time.
