RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hello!

Hello!

I'm thatguycringingxfolo, and I'm an 11 year old brit, and while i haven't had it too bad as some of you lot, I still despise school. I'm probably normal, with my 'uh, i hate school, i don't wanna go', but my main problem is the stupid reputation I have given myself with the other kids.

Let me introduce myself:

First off, I often say stupid stuff which I regret. It's annoying, but I do, and it happens quite a bit, so i'll probably say some stupid stuff i won't realize is stupid for a while. Probably this introduction of myself.

Anyway, I'm an English kid, boy, in middle school. It's not a bad middle school, there's one nearby that if I went to, i'd go to a high school with reported stabbings, and honestly, that's one place i really don't want to spend 7 hours a day at.

So, at school, what could I not like? The education is good, the teachers are fine, the building is good overall, and the school has a great system. So what possibly?

Ah, yes.

The other fucking kids.

Honestly, I hate them. Little brats, acting like jesus because they know what 69 means. Always annoying, and I wish they'd just shut the fuck up all the time.

Of course, I have some friends. Just gonna put that in, one of the few people there I can tolerate being near.

Anyway, why do they dislike me? Me. It's my fault, and I hate myself for it. You see, in lower school, elementary, whatever you call it, i had a friend.

I'm just gonna put this in. I act like my friends. If my friends annoying, i get annoying. If my friend is hyper, i'm hyper. You get what I mean.

Anyway, in lower school, my friend was just... well, you know. It's quite personal to me, and I don't know to truly share it yet.

Anyway, he was fine, but once it was on me, I was wierd. It was like everyone liked me, now i know they were pretending. Oh, the regrets. Anyway, I worked it out, sort of got away from him. Then bam, middle school, with only one other friend who was with me. I found more friends, which was good, although I still had the stupidity inside of me. So, when I wasn't hanging out with these kids:

oh innit swag oh yeah dat wat she said ye swag ya so kool yeah look at my shizzle

I started to get teased. Everyone pretending to like me sort. Still happens, but I can tell now. Anyway, during this, i was just wierd. Other of those kids saw, and now it's hard to find a person who really likes me. Most people can tolerate, others don't like. Just don't pretend to like me, just say. I don't care, I don't like you either.

And here I am, the wierd kid. It's not all bad, I just dread PE and worst of all, seating plans. The groans and laughter from others as they have to sit next to me. Ugh.

So yeah, that's why I do not enjoy school.

Anyway, I yammered on for a bit. God. That was longer than I expected.

So yeah, I'm not a fan of school.

Well, I'll see you guys around, although I won't be super active.

Hello!

I read it all. It's not really that bad. You should see how much information xcriteria includes in one post! Razz I still read all of that anyway because it's crucial.

Hello!

Welcome. As for the other kids... maybe if they learned some "social and emotional skills" things would be different.

These days, a lot of people want to help students learn how to have empathy, make better decisions, understand why they do what they do, and so on. Typical school subjects don't cover that... and obviously parents don't always do the best job.

This explains the idea:

http://www.betterevidence.org/uk-edition...that-work/

Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and young people (as well as adults) acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to:

Recognise and manage emotions;
Set and achieve positive goals;
Demonstrate care and concern for others;
Establish and maintain positive relationships;
Make responsible decisions; and
Handle interpersonal situations effectively.

These are learnable skills. But a lot of times people don't expect middle schoolers to do so. Or they try to focus on punishments, which don't tend to help.

Feel free to share your stories, and maybe we can all figure out, after years of these forums being around, how to better help people make their way through it all.

Hello!

Welcome to School Survival! I'm DoA Smile

A common expression, attributed to many (including Theodore Geisel, though there is no proof he said it), is this: "Those who matter don’t care, and those who care don’t matter." If you feel as though you are being judged by your peers, remember that the fact that they've concerned themselves with what you are doing is a testament to how little is going on in their lives and how desperate they are to make themselves feel better.

We're all weird here, so I'd say you're in good company. Welcome aboard!
