RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Is School Enough? Full PBS Documentary [55m]

Justin Schwamm just pointed me to this... I'm watching it now.

http://video.pbs.org/video/2365073145/

"Examine a new frontier that could reshape education — the importance of breaking out of the classroom and connecting students to the wider world. This approach encourages young people to learn from what they care about most. As one expert puts it, school should not just be preparation for life — but “life itself.”

Hidden stuff:

Here's an article about the documentary:

http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2013/09/is-school-enough-documentary-film-delves-in/

I'm thinking of how to use a documentary series format that shows the gap between what's possible, and the reality that most who find School Survival have to deal with...

Thoughts on that, as well as the content of this?

Haven't watched yet, plan on it.

But...

Quote:the importance of breaking out of the classroom and connecting students to the wider world.

Herp derp no shit. What's funny is "adults" will come to this forum and see late preteens and teens saying this and say "you are just immature and don't have enough knowledge or experience and your frontal lobes aren't developed because I read an article and blah blah blah" but some guy who says "hey, I'm old with glasses and I'm an expert" and they all agree or at least take him more seriously.

Man a lot of times adults say "being a kid was the best no responsibilities and yeaaahhh" but I sure don't envy you guys. Yeah, I look back nostalgically as well, but I have the logic to be able to remember how frustrated, angry, and upset I was at my lack of freedom and the disrespect I received because of my age. Most adults seem to forget how they actually felt.

The amazing thing is, views are really starting to change. Lots of adult experts are arguing in favor of education as something done with/by the learner themselves, based on how learning best works for them, rather than imposed upon them arbitrarily.

This documentary shows a number of stories of learning, and clips of those adult experts (like Michael Wesch, one of my favorites... he has some very good talks)... and it does so for a PBS audience. It's a little bit "slow" as a result... but it explains these better ways of learning as a positive, expected, normal thing.

The missing piece (that I want to show in documentary/video formats) is the massive gap between these increasingly popular ideas about learner-driven education, and the stuck-in-the-past "shut up and deal with it" advice that most on these forums are familiar with.

It's like two totally different worlds sitting side by side, with nobody pointing out the discrepancy.

Yeah, exactly. Or, they remember the frustration, anger, and upset, but they see that as just being normal, a.k.a., "growing up sucks," vs. seeing that there's a different way to do things, at least to a large extent.

I agree, it is becoming more common. The one size fits all (and if it doesn't we force it on) model is not the best we can do. Sure, it is better than mass illiteracy but we can do better. It also has the nasty side effect of promoting authoritarian structured societies.

Quote:The missing piece (that I want to show in documentary/video formats) is the massive gap between these increasingly popular ideas about learner-driven education, and the stuck-in-the-past "shut up and deal with it" advice that most on these forums are familiar with.

Ugh the most frustrating argument ever. "This is why kids don't listen blah blah blah we baby them" which ironically is the opposite of what we want to do. We want to give them more responsibility, let them fail, let them deal with things on their own as much as reasonably possible, direct their learning. Essentially treat them like humans.

Quote:Yeah, exactly. Or, they remember the frustration, anger, and upset, but they see that as just being normal, a.k.a., "growing up sucks," vs. seeing that there's a different way to do things, at least to a large extent.

True, they view their hardships as being a "teen" issue when they don't realize it is a lack of freedom and massive disrespect issue.
