RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Due to inclement weather, the power was knocked out last night. Expect it to remain this way another few days. If you need me, I might be able to go to McD or something.

If by boredom you mean annoyance and arguments, then yes.

Internet is out now... besides sporadic mobile crap. Expect things to remain like this for the next few days...

Tell human, the usual.

On a related note, my dad applied for a high paying job at Notre Dame University. Well, that's all for now...

Power outages are the few times I'm forced to read books.

Not that I don't read books(I've got at least 200+ books, about 150 that I've read, about 100 I've read more than once), but the internet just gives so much more information at your finger tips that despite the numerous unread books I have yet to complete reading, I'm still browsing wikipedia Razz

RE: Outage Notification Thread

Actually, I think I should clarify. The reason the Internet is out is because we're due to those monopolists at Comcast, not because of a power outage or anything.

Internet is being unreliable and intermittent, may shut down soon. If I'm not on IRC, that's why.

Well, it's been a while. Have a $200 bill for Comcast coming up soon and they may shut us down sooner... On that note Dad has a job interview tonight for another company... Wish me luck...

Also, if Walter doesn't see this on his own, tell him.

Interesting. Not many local ISPs for the most part...

I'm wondering how we can get a budget to work with -- to provide a stipend for those focusing on SS, to provide a fund for basic connectivity and tech needs of active members, to support travel and film production costs if possible, and to pay credentialed experts to help us win over parents.

Take a look at this: http://www.gofundme.com/xx9js -- $20k of this was raised within 24 hours. There are people out there with money to throw at causes as simple as one person's bad day if they feel like it matters. Compare that to the number of bad days those on these site experience!

People within SS can provide, and have provided, financial help to each other at times, but none of us (that I know) is rich, and there are so many people we aren't reaching with things as they are.

If we run a crowdfunding campaign, mind if I mention your situation?
