RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Ass.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

I'm mainly referring to the Classic Cartoon Network (Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Foster's [I said '00s and '90s,] and even a little bit of Ed Edd n' Eddy.) Maybe a little of the Disney Channel cartoons too, but I'll give you that FiM isn't like classic Nickelodeon, but I don't think of Classic Nick when I think '90s cartoons.

I would comment on your assumption of it being for little girls, but then we'd both get banned and the thread deleted.

First of all, morals are merely a social construct, boundries. They are not inherently good nor bad, though often they obstruct and inhibit individuals. In which way should morals make something more appealing?
Second, blood can make a show way more interesting. No need to sugarcoat things - like it happened in the A-Team, where all those fights did not end in bloody mouths, beaten eyes, broken arms and broken rips. It would be bad for this kind of target audience though(little girls and their concerened moms).
I won't adress Mr. G.G. for he does not concern me the slightest. But I don't see and "90's cartoon feel" in any of the episodes ... well, the 5 minutes I could stand to watch after skipping the intro song.
One scene to justify the appeal of a whole damned series? Seriously? It's like justifying GoT with the sentence "That awesome scene where joffrey dies from poison which was given to him by that old lady".
Now or the universe, well. That depends strongly on the person.
Cuteness and Innocence. Appealing to appearantly more than just little girls and their concerened moms, but also to W.K. fedoras.

I don't really know how the hell those fanvideos should be badass. Well, theres one thing, the fine line between doing something badass and something insanely idiotic/stupid. Often these two things intersect, like jumping from a giant building and trusting nothing more than a parachute. Which is more awesome than to make a video about a child show about ponies.
The community seems to be weird to say at least. Also very delusioned.
For the art, well, art is art. Can't argue about that. Porn is also art, but most people probably won't accept that.
Wheres the appeal in analysis videos? Dude, ever watched T.V. during the World Cup (which was supplemented with the Super Bowl in the USA)? They overanalyze every damned little detail, producing nothing more than mere hot air and wasting oxygen.
After the Twilight series, I am quite eerie of fan fictions. They, in many cases, represent the storytelling skills of a cat with the brain of a 4-year-old human.

Now seriously, where the damned hell is appeal in this show?

As for the show's appeal, I haven't actually seen it. I would imagine that any fan would be able to tell you what aspect of the show appeals to them, so it would be a bit of a stretch to say no appeal exists.

RE: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic

Who do you mean with "him"? Are you attacking my religion? Are you telling me not to follow Jesus?

Or are you telling me not to hail to the king (or King Asshole for that matter).

Well, I watched for a limited period of time (5 minutes, which translates into 300 seconds) and found it annoying. Big time. It just seems like a waste of time. "Oh my god its talking ponies!" - how is that *not* the stereotypical little girls dream (until the pony tells the girl she's fat. That's where the lasagna comes in).

Your quarrel with SV is most entertaining by the way. He does provoke interesting reactions...though he's right on at least one thing, the target audience of MLP was little girls (at least in the beginning).
That has even been stated on wikipedia with citations...(In effect following line: "Despite the target demographic of young girls and their parents,[100][130] My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic has become an Internet phenomenon, with many male fans between 13 and 35.[131] ").
I wonder what one calls a "brony" over the age of 35. A weirdo maybe?

By the way, banning people over nothing more than a mere childrens show? Sounds like its become more of an "my opinion is right and if you disagree than you shalt be banned" than an anti-schooling movement.
So basically the same as the people you think you oppose.

RE: My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic

Ahh, this shit again.

Who gives a fuck what the target audience is? "X is intended for Y" does not mean that Y is the entire extent of everything that can happen with it and if Z gets involved it is a universe-rending abomination. If that were the case MacGyver would be public enemy number one.

BTW I don't really like the show any more. I used to but now find it very in-your-face and blunt. I don't know if I'll be able to watch the rest of S4 because of this fact. HOWEVER, MLP did get me through a tough point in my life. I'm not sure if I'd be alive today if not for some of the people whose opinion of me went from "guy to avoid" to "all right guy I guess" when they found out I was a brony. And when I started liking the show and fandom less, I started examining my beliefs to see whether they were a. a good match for this group is was purportedly a member of, and b. whether or not they were correct. I had never achieved this level of introspection before that and I'm not sure I ever would have if I hadn't been a brony and had those conflicts. Maybe I would have had some other experience in its place, I don't know.

Yes, I have some merchandise. Even if I never watch another episode in my life, I will still wear the shirts and hug the plushes and if the fact that I happen to have been born with a dick means I am a "weirdo" or a "pervert" for doing so, so be it.

*slinks back to cave to await ban*

My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic

Porn was intended for men.

But I'm pretty sure there are women who watch it.
(In fact enough that there is now porn made for women).

Show appeal:
- Morals
- The lack of gore/blood
- The lack of Gore Gorath
- The Late 90's/2000's cartoon feel
- The characters (Pinkie feels less annoying and more charming over time)
- The fight scene in the S4 finale
- The universe
- The cute
- The innocence

Fandom appeal:
- Badass fanvideos
- 50% of the community
- Fanart (REAL fanart, not that Porn junk)
- Analysis videos
- 10% of all fanfics

1. True.
2. But substanceless blood? I like blood too, but a break is nice.
3. Mostly the character tropes. Smart one, dumb one, farm one, nice one, fashion-obssesed one. The only one who's basic description is not a '00s cartoon trope is Rainbow Dash. Also, I wasn't talking about '90s cartoons as much as I was talking about '00s cartoons that started in the '90s.
4. I don't know why I put that there either.
5. Yep.
6. Da fuq? I understand not liking innocence, but who doesn't like adorable things?

7. Smile HD, PONY.MOV, or Snowdrop.
8. That's the 50% I wasn't talking about.
9. Yep.
10. Trust me. It's a LOT more interesting than Sports Analysis. Come back once you've watched one of these (not MLP, but similar concept: https://www.youtube.com/user/MatthewPatrick13 )
11. That's why I said 10%. Also, Twilight fans are more delusional because most of them want to hav hawt s3x with Edward and make fanfics of it. It's easier to find MLP fanfics that aren't about pairings or self-inserts because it is NOT A romance show. Same with Skyrim, Call of Duty, Minecraft, Game of Thrones, The Hobbit and anything that isn't about love or sex (except Sonic.)

For anyone who remembers me going on an archive binge: Thank you all. I know I ended it being a drama queen, I don't really agree with the ideology anymore, and I'm really not the same person I was (I went through a neopagan phase!) but still this site was the first online community I was in. I graduated from school and turned 18. Time flies. KFC Nyan Cat, June 20, 2019.
