RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Mistaken for a guy
I've been on a lot on online forums...and amusingly, most people there seem to think that I'm male; and not just because of my usernames. Many times, even if I have a feminine username I get comments like "I thought you were a guy" and so on.
Why, do you think, does gender make such a big difference even online, when we are mostly hidden? I had always assumed that online spaces were there so that people could move beyond the constraints of race, gender, and so on. So why is it so important?
Secondly, there are types/cliches that say stuff like "there are no women on the internet" have been proven to be false, and people still believe them. Why??
And finally, is there any difference between men and women on the internet?? (As in surfing, posting, etc.)
Don't play chess with pigeons-they'll just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut about like they won anyway.

RE: Mistaken for a guy
I blame the lack of gender neutral pronouns in the English language.

Mistaken for a guy
The first online community I ever joined thought I was a girl until I pointed out that I wasn't.

RE: Mistaken for a guy
Everyone on the internet thinks I'm a guy until I tell them I'm not. Tho some people refuse to believe me... they either assume I'm transgender or want me to show them pics... lmao

Mistaken for a guy
People always think I'm a girl tbh
They also usually think I'm 18-32 (yes, someone actually guessed that once.)

Mistaken for a guy
I mistook someone on here for a girl because their name ended with an "a"... might sound sort of weird since we're not talking about actual names, but my brain is sort of wired to think that names that end with a = girl name

Mistaken for a guy
I've been mistaken for a female IRL before, and I do have the body to pull it off...
Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Pic or GTFO.(to all the "girls")
* brainiac3397 begins to chuckle quietly and evily while rubbing his hands together like a cliche disney villain.
I've never been mistaken. I guess my testosterone just leaks through the web.
I guess it mainly lays in the username though.

There are gender neutral pronouns. What we lack is a gender-neutral human singular pronoun.

Because the English language never changes. Neither does war. Maybe English is war.
