RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

RE: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

This is a very good video actually, Wes. People always look at the negative and generally act as if it overshadows the positive. I get so tired of it. However, some great achievements of the 21st century include:

1. Violent street crime being reduced significantly. The days of street crime epidemics in the 90s are long gone.
2. 47 countries ranking in a "very high" HDI level development, the highest ever since reporting started in 1990. In addition, the World average HDI is .694, and keeps growing.
3. The fact that the 2000s have had the least war casualties out of any decade since the end of World War II.
4. That we keep making medical breakthroughs.

And so much more.

Yes, we have so many challenges on this planet, but it's important not to look completely (or even mostly) at the negative side. We've made so much progress that much of it is considered minor.

Good god, the comments on that video (On Youtube, not here) have got to be some of the most disgusting, repulsive and the most biased depressive asses of shit I have ever had the displeasure of reading through.

And this is coming from a guy who despises the everliving fuckshit out of PewDiePie.

This is why I hate your country so much, America.

RE: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

America is 17.4 trillion in debt. Our natural resources are dwindling. The oceans are dying. There's no hope of keeping the rest of our carbon out of the atmosphere. Human population has already surpassed sustainable numbers. Aquifers are being destroyed and drying up. Glaciers that hold water are melting. The divide between the rich and the poor is incredible. Billions live without access to clean water. Starvation and death from malnutrition is rampant. My neighborhood isn't safe. My healthcare sucks. I'm in debt. There's a constant slew of legislation that makes my professional life more and more miserable every year. CEO billionaires have the economy locked up. The bankers are greedier than ever. The military is so bloated it's crippling the rest of the American economy. The world banks are keeping third world countries in debt. Healthy food is too expensive for people to afford. The most ignorant violent chimplike people are having far more babies than intelligent civilized people. Almost all of my students have relatives in prison. Fatherhood is pretty much completely dead. Less than 5% of my students live with their biological father. Americans are addicted to Xanax and ADHD drugs by the tens of millions. Nuclear proliferation is still a problem.

Don't worry. Be happy.

So what you are basically saying is that seeing the positives in life is a stupid thing.

Ok, some of your points here are real problems, but about half of this whole thing are problems that you yourself have faced. Ok, I do feel really sorry for the shit you are going through, but you know what?
Do not go and force all that shit down other's throats, let alone for the sake of making that last sarcastic statement you put there.

No one is forcing anyone to be "all happy" or something, but it is pretty much worse to force others to be "all sad and depressed".

You see, it is this kind of depressive bias that is so infectuous. Basically, some random person who wants to look around for things to admire, will stumble upon something absolutely soulless and depressive (such as your post here)

And do not come to me with that fucking "But that is the way it is" statement. It is just a bullshit excuse to make more people lose their purpose in living.

I get it, you have a hard life, and I feel very sorry for you that you have to live like that, but for fuck's sake, do not go around and post a giant wall of shit text that would make other people uneccessarily depressed. It is like you want to pull other people down to your spot.

And I do not only mean that for you, I mean that for all the stupid pessimistic bias.

There are people out there who want to find positive things to think about despite all the negative shit going on. They know the shit that is going on, but they still want to find a light in the dark, and I do not see a behaviour like that as a weakness.

Not everything is amazing, yeah, but that does not mean everything is awful either.

There is ALWAYS a light in every dark no matter what, but if people like you are just gonna sit here and exclusively adress all the negative stuff and think that life on earth as a human is worthless and just a dark world where there is no good, then you know what? Just blow it out your ass.

I think TheCancer tried to show an example of contrast, but I agree with you, Ferigeras. Cancer was looking way too much into the negative as well, and only said "We can fly airplanes and use the Internet!", while ignoring the massive social and technological progress we've made since the Industrial Revolution.

But alas, that's what it is. Contrast. You have it right, Ferigeras. There's always a bright side and a dark side. I think it's very possible that human civilization can overcome challenges like global warming, if only our governments had enough competence to do so.

RE: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

Yeah... despite how much there is brightness in darkness, one fact that never changes: Government is incompetent.

The funniest thing?
I usually feel very sad when people die, and it is just of my morality. Even people I hated or still hate, I always feel sad for the misfortune they might have.
In this case, I would not even lose a wink of sleep if any president or "high power" dies from some kind of disease like cancer, stupidity, or their mere existence.

It just goes to show that no matter what high rank someone is, they are not anything worth more.

On a different note, if you want to look for a good source for positivity, a kind of news site that actually spreads good news, take a look at this site:
Good News Network

I would totally recommend this site to anyone who is just sick of depressive and negative probably-propaganda news and wants to see something wonderful in society.
Or I would just recommend this site to ANYONE in that matter.

RE: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

Slightly off-topic

Empathy is a strange thing. People have the capacity to really connect with others, delve deep into what ails their fellow man... but it's so biased. Some people are wholly devoted to stopping world hunger, others animal cruelty, and so on. I wonder if there were some global problems that all the philanthropists of the world ought to just unite on for a time and wipe them out one by one as opposed to mildly helping thousands of tragedies.

It's like we aren't thinking it through.

RE: Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

Isn't it a staple of this community to say "Ok, today's education is better than it used to be, but just because something is better than it used to be doesn't mean we should settle for it." ? Or am i just an oldfaf and now we're just gonna ignore real world problems for faux positivity in a world where so much has to be done or the literal fate of the entire human race could be compromised over the next few hundred years. :|

Giving hope, fine. Giving a false sense of security or a false sense that everything will be fine, everything will be ok, don't bother focusing on bad things is just negligant. where the shit is my spellcheck at damn

Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

The end of the video also pointed out how the world is continuing to improve. I don't things will move forward unless we keep the ball rolling, but there's every reason to expect that we can keep it rolling and things can get better (at least as far as the majority of humanity's material conditions are concerned).

Hope is what's important. I couldn't care less about whether anyone thinks the world is fine or not fine; what matters is that, no matter how it is, it can improve.

Everything's amazing and nobody's happy

I don't think the video ever said "let's do nothing, everything will fix itself". In fact I think the message it sends is the opposite: we as humans have achieved so much over the centuries, and we can, and must, continue to do more to improve.

Even if life has never been easier, there's always a chance to improve. Education is one big issue that needs to be addressed, especially with the economic needs of the 21st century being much different than that of the 19th century.
