RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Introduction, or something

Alright, this forum won't let me reply to anyone's posts, so I have no choice but to make one of...these posts. Which I've been dreading, since I hate these icebreaker introduction type things.

Um...I'm Zo. I would have made Oz my username, but apparently somebody already took it.
I'm pretty sure I'm an introvert. Libraries sound more appealing than prom and being social in general, except with a small group of close people.
I hate school (obviously). My friends and I are trying to construct an anti-school resource website after a string of other half-good-half-fail rebellions.
I've been begging/pleading/proposing rational arguments for my parents to let me unschool since last year. They are tired of it.
I'm labeled gifted, but I don't want to be, since that whole system of labeling is another ridiculous invention of the school system.
I'm taking Latin, and I'm decent at it, although I haven't really studied sentence construction yet.
I can also play chess. I'm not very good. Yet.
I spend my spare time writing (possibly good?) poetry, collecting found items in the woods, reading about various topics on the internet, and pacing about.
I think this constitutes a decent introduction for a socially awkward person such as I. I'll have to reveal more about myself later.

Yes. Muffins are delicious. I don't eat them very often, but they are delicious.
My family has a good recipe for pumpkin chocolate chip muffins and they are a great autumn treat.

Wazzup Gwedin de awesome.

I mostly listen to the alt. rock bands my friends get me into, some indie, and some classic rock (although it's only a band or two and I really should get into it more).
I'm open to any and all suggestions, though. I've only really started to seriously listen to music since a year or so ago and love discovering different bands--I picture it as wading deeper and deeper out into an ocean of different genres.
What music do you recommend?

Thank you all for the replies--I was having a rather crappy evening and this cheered me up immensely.
I'm going offline but will get on tomorrow in between three different projects/homework/standardized test review. Ugh, standardized tests. I wrote a whole essay for class on why I hated them and will probably write plenty of rants in here about them too...

To make a long story short, my parents set my internet to shut down at random points in the day so i "don't spend too much time on it." this is why i must go off, even on chat. This is being pecked out from a cell phone with a dying battery. (this post was supposed to be a reply to gwendin's. Phones make everything complicated.)

RE: Introduction, or something

Hello! I may as well drop some band recommendations while I'm here. Well, what I'm listening to at the moment. My go to alternative band is The Mountain Goats. The band leader, John Darnielle, has been hailed as the next Bob Dylan. There's also Kaizers Orchestra, a Norwegian band that's a mix of punk rock and folk, and known for their use of the oil drum and wheel rim in their music (My avatar is their logo.) Also, Emilie Autumn. The best description I know is a bipolar Enya who can play a good violin. So... yeah. Enjoy!

I've heard some of the Mountain Goats before. They have an interesting sound.

Maybe so, but that might be the stimulus you need to learn even more about computers.
