RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Feel Like Crying

Oh, look. Haven't done one of these in a while...

I have so much schoolwork to do. So fucking much, and only a few weeks to do it. I need to get into a work mode, but I can't do it. All of this work is shit. None of it is about my passions, and I just don't have the drive to do it. I'm shutting down, and I can't do that.

What's even worse is that I could work on my passions. In Music Appreciation, I could work my ass off and get to the eras of music I like. And I'm willing to do it. But my parents want me to do tedious trigonometry, or pull my hair out over English. I want to work, but they won't let me.

What's even worse is the stress because of my parent's lack of understanding of the school. They only care about how many things I turn in, not the work behind it. So four quizzes is loads better than a one one page essay. I could get yelled at for turning one thing in. Which makes the quizzes more worth it to me, so I do those and leave the essay for later.

It's just stress. So much stress... I am not happy. I am stress. And even worse... confirmation class is coming up in a few weeks. I can't do it. I can't.

So, there's my almost essay length spiel. I just needed to write it... So, yeah.

Is there any way you could get your GED if your parents were against other alternatives (e.g. homeschooling, unschooling)? It's a bittersweet alternative, but I think the positives outweighs the negatives. I got mine in 2 weeks.

Seven crappy hours of our lives.

RE: Feel Like Crying

Yeah, it sounds like your life is really crappy ATM. Maybe just have a meltdown, and let it all out. Seems quite a lot you're going through.

It's great if you can come up with a way around school, but that's also really scary to even talk about when everyone is so caught up in it.

People might make it seem otherwise, but not doing your homework doesn't make you a bad person.

I found it quite helpful to pretend that I was stupid and unable to understand my parents or teachers; at least they couldn't argue with me if I did that.

People will suddenly start treating you like an adult at some point, so you just need to last a few more years.

And crying is great, so you should do that! Hide in your bed and pretend you're sleeping if you don't want your parents to see.
