RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School is a living nightmare

I go to school five days a week being forced to deal with it. We sit in a class room working from bell to bell.School even push the notion that a test or exam represents how ourselves. For me it represents crap and is worthless. The purpose of education is to learn not to constantly do nothing but work. I just rather sit home and play my ps3 other be indoctrinated. School makes most of childhood a living hell and im getting fed up with it. It ruins the purpose of critical thinking, dum down many brilliant minds and is apparently getting a way with it. Life is about being thankful that your living not about working with no purpose. I don't have a passion for being here especially if i so call have no choice, also my parents make me go to school without letting me miss a day which makes it all worse. The School system needs to die already!

School is a living nightmare

I think part of the System need to be changed. They have some ridiculous rules.

RIP URY AND GWEDIN
"The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches a lesson."-Tom Bodett

"I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing."-Neil Gaimen

School is a living nightmare

My parents are grade-obsessed, and because I got good grades when I was younger they put me in a gifted program (which really isn't much more challenging to me, except that the math problems take longer). They won't let me skip a day or go below a B grade, and pester me when I don't have everything done. And they wonder why I shut myself in my room so often!

As for parts of the system that need to be changed, I'd say definitely the standardized testing. They think that everyone has to know the exact things and score well on some test that has no bearing on how the "skill" would be used in real life.

Warning: I may not always make sense. I may rant about random things. Don't say I didn't warn you.

That's the problem, parents don't see what we go through.

Or if they do, they label it as "just a phase", or ignore us to go with the "social norm". At least that's what mine do. I've suggested unschooling multiple times, with my reassurance that I'd do enough of the "core subjects" to get a high school diploma like they're forcing me to do, but they won't accept any alternatives. It doesn't help that my mom used to be a teacher, either...

Oh god, that's horrible. My aunt is a Spanish teacher at some catholic school I think and her and my uncle said if I were to stay with them that I would need to go to college and stuff. They said they would help me if I did that, and I just kind of shrugged it off because I never felt passionately about going to college. It doesn't help now that I know what I want to do, and it's completely the opposite of furthering my "education".

Now sometimes my mom teases me about doing something. She showed me this paper sent over the mail about some well-known community college where I live and she said I could go into a gaming program, and I told her off in a passive-aggressive tone saying that just because you play video games a lot doesn't necessarily mean you want to develop them. I also used 2 examples, saying that just because you love candy that doesn't mean you want to work in a candy factory, or that just because you're into high fashion that doesn't mean you want to design clothes. Then when I ignore her she'll say something like, "Oh, now you're mad at me," and giggle, or, "Well you have to either go to school or get a part-time job. You just can't be sitting on your laptop all day".

Now she's just acting more irritatingly childish. Rolleyes

Not that easy. My parents us my grades to judge me. If I have bad grades I'm bad and I get less privileges, If I have good grades I'm good and I get more love. etc.

School is indirectly controling me.

School is a living nightmare

It's annoying how some people ignore logical arguments by concentrating on something else. If I tell you your pants are on fire, I'm not mad at you, I'm telling you that your pants have spontaneously combusted and you are now on fire.
