RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Crying
I fucking hate school and that's no secret. Today made me think I should just run away. I have been pushed to the point of crying and now I feel fucking embarrassed. Why should I have to hold back my tears when someone is acting like an asshole. Crying is just something that happens why should I be made fun of it or have to hold back. I just want everything to end. I hate to say it, but I just want to run away or even die. I know I won't actually commit suicide or run away, but I can dream.

RE: Crying
Crying is often an emotional response to extreme frustration.
In the school equation it is important to consider what variables might be altered to reduce the frustration.
1. Leave school. (drop out, homeschool, charter school, vocational school, etc.)
2. Stop caring. (let everyone write you off as a looser so they don't hit you with their expectations)
3. Become religious. (people will avoid you like the plague if you always want to tell them about Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed.)
4. Consider retardation. It may be possible to feign a struggle with material and garner pity from teachers.
5. Consider mental illness. If you shout at the top of your lungs whenever anyone asks you the simplest of questions, you might find people stop bothering you.
The problems with 4 and 5 is that you might mobilize legions of social workers and be forever branded with their labels.
Another way to survive the slings and arrows of outrageous school fortune is to identify what it is you want to do and do it covertly. Building a career or following an interest can build hope in the midst of oppression. If everything you experience is dictated by the powers that be, life can look pretty grim. If however, you can build a part of your life that is yours, you can use it as an anchor or safe harbor until the time comes when you can escape their clutches.

At least you can cry. I can't even do that anymore.

Well in PE some guy on my team grabbed the ball from me like some kind of toddler and the teachers "dealt with it" by forcing him to apologize. I don't accept these kinds of apologies and keep in mind we were on the same team. I later heard some guys after class talking behind my back in the hallway about us losing the game because I was being a ball hog. As a female they all have a prejudice against me doing terribly in sports and so when I make a mistake that they are all guilty of I will be blamed/brought attention to. That made me feel pretty terrible inside and in the afternoon the same guy from before ripped up something I'd made out of paper on my fucking desk. I then started to lash out at people for how stupid this guy was acting. I ended up crying and making a fool of myself in the end. Anyway that's my story of the day and I have the weekend to get over it.
