RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Oooh... That first one is kinda nice... I like the vocal overlays. Bit too ambient for me tho.

Second one is better, I'm sucker for drones over a strong backbeat. The electronic instrumentation is nice too.

Her voice is nice, but that progression has been done to shit, I'm kinda numb to it. Not that bad of a song though.

Oh, Major Parkinson has been reformed! They've released two singles, one a few months ago, one last week. Not sure what to think of them though...

Good to hear they're back, I genuinely like them, much more than your Kaizers. The first one is kind of unremarkable but still solid.

The second though is lovely and different to what I'm used to from them, that woman's a great vocalist, it's good to see they didn't drop her vocals after that last album

Third one, I hate hate HATE this kind of vocals and slow heavy music always puts me to sleep.

Fourth one I was enjoying until everything just turned to noise at idk, 1.10. Other than those parts it's great. reminds me of chelsea wolfe

fifth is just... eh. It's not bad but it just seems to be trying too hard to be different to regular rock, idk

I'm eagerly awaiting Lorde's next album

edgy rubbish that reminds me of the birthday massacre that I think I posted earlier in this thread

That's Primus buddy. Everyone realizes that and loves it anyway.

First one... IS THAT A TRAP FLAVORED BEAT?!?!?! Every pop song for the past few years needs to have trap in it for some fucking reason I don't understand, which is irritating as hell. I don't care about the quality of the song, -100000/10 for making me endure trap yet again.

Second one... What accent is that? I don't like it. The beginning was nice and ominous, but not the proper opening to a power ballad. I like it when the drums kick in though, they need to do that earlier in the song. The outro is nice and creepy too.

Third one... Music is nice, but she's clearly not comfortable with her voice, which is a shame. If she was doing this at a talent show, I would be like "Holy shit, this chick is going places." and she very clearly went places.

Last one, oh this is very edgy indeed. Is this trying to mix industrial music and circus music? That's a hard thing to do, because you can't weight down the circus bits or make the industrial bits less heavy. This song is suffering from the former, which makes it sound gimmicky. Don't like it that much.

Let's go with some indie shit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjnEkJa2Law
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_a1hPwXiWw
Prefer the second song to the first, but some interesting things happen in the first one too. The vocal harmonies are very nice on both of them, but they happen towards the end.

Oh, noise rock is pretty nice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgi3ZvolkRQ
Favorite music video of all time, by the way.

Let's throw in some Angels of Light too, because Michael Gira is a demented genius.

i'll never be able to critique like you

i hate most indie and car seat headrest is no exception. is he trying to hide his shitty teenage boy voice behind that "thing" he's got going on there? that thing is the only interesting part of the song and the rest just comes off as your usual boring indie rock. don't even get me started on the video

the second is even worse because his bland voice isn't hidden behind whatever that was. same usual boring instrumentation

i like this one better because his bad voice suits the music well and the music is also good. i like that buildup they got going on there at roughly 1.30. good video too

he's got some kind of country-abo fusion thing going on there with his voice at the start. not a fan but whatever. the rest of the song comes off as a massive mess and i still don't see the appeal of michael gira

First one... I like that drum beat, but I don't like the vocals. Seem a bit too played up for my taste. Lyrics are irritating.

Second... What the fuck? and I don't mean that in a positive or negative way.

Third... Mixing of the vocals ruin it. It's a shame, because everything else is pretty badass.

Quite like this first one, the, uh, twangy (fuck off) guitars are great and go well with the high pitch vocals. nice upbeat stuff

what a ridiculous intro. the whole song is uninteresting and the vocals don't grab my attention. only that irregular background noise is notable

I haven't heard this one before. but i don't like it like i do nearly every song on mistake in parting. the instrumentation is boring (the guitars later in the song are actually somewhat irritating) and her voice isn't nearly as good as it came to be but that might just be the recording, idk

it's fun to shit on nirvana out of contrarianism but i can't really do that tbh. they're always a great listen

i don't know what this genre would be called. some kind of experimental... folk??

First one... Yeah, definitely folk. Really like the drums and the harmonies, but I'd rather listen to Angels of Light.

Second one... Eh... Sounds like I've heard it a million times.

Third... Root to fourth on the bass. Always appreciate that. And these are the kind of vocals I really like... Might check this singer/group later.

First one... There's something interesting about the general mood of it, but what the fuck are the lyrics... I either really like the voice or I really hate it.

Second... Oh, this is very different... Ah, it got loud. I can't stand quiet songs unless I know it's building to some climax of some sort. I like it.

Third... I like it but I don't want to.

Fourth... What the fuck are these vocals. I was enjoying it up to that. No character at all. Bleh.

This is some pop music in the form of blues rock. It's a bit trashy but it's fun.

First one... I think I like it. Maybe. I at least like the glitchy drums set to the folksy melody. The distorted guitars are a bit much.

Second one... It's pretty good pop that features metal guitars. Very catchy. But, it's not metal as I like to understand it, so I don't want to think about them.

Third one... Nice, slow, and drony. Me likey.

Let's do some more Emma Ruth Rundle:

And while we're on the topic of white chicks with acoustic guitars;

expected the opposite. nice.

first one. when she gets real quiet at like 0:48 i get a music boner. it's beautiful up til like 2minute mark where she gets loud. but even then it's still good i guess. i'm just not a huge fan of sudden transitions like that in "gentle" works i guess. guitar work at 3:00 roughly is pretty nice tbh

baker. yeah. generic white chick with a guitar #544621558085438. there's literally nothing remarkable about her except for her ability to shill herself on /mu/ 24/7

groovy. i like the buildup in the background that begins around 0:40 or whatever. wouldn't listen to it again though.

I might have posted this years ago in the thread. w/e, can't be bothered checking.

Guitar so cliched. Real men listen to a ballad by mongolian throat singers.

If you insist on a guitar, at least go with the bestest of guitars: the Spanish Guitar

OMG

First one; Eh, not a fan of solo piano general.

Second one; Guitar is okay, love the bass and the melodica and how the drums build up, not a huge fan of the talkiness of the vocals. But I will be checking out more.

Third one; EXCUSE ME THIS IS JULIEN BAKER BUT WITH DUBBED OVER VOCALS FUCK YOU MAN anyway I like it

Funny story, I randomly came across this band after surfing the internet;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c9jfjq4Y24

and after looking into more of their stuff I accidentally ran into this band and liked them too;

Huh, that didn't get me to three songs... Some clipping. because why the fuck not;

you suck cock you know.

first is a bit generic. nice but i wouldn't go back to it again, there's just nothing remarkable about this.

"half-lit" oh boy this won't be utter shite i'm sure. nah honestly it isn't that bad but it just comes off as kinda... amatureish? idk

i don't like hiphop or rap or whatever this is. i'm surprised you actually posted some.

Wrong. The one you linked is actually the first one I ever listened to and it's still one of ma faves so all you did was link me to my fave.

Suck it.

First one... This sounds a lot like Angels of Light... Maybe with some Nordic flair. We need more folksy music out there, so I approve. That bass is rad.

Second one... Reversed things are always good, but... Not a fan of the vocals. Drums are nea tho and I HEAR FUCKING JULIEN BAKER IN THIS YOU TWAT

Third one... Hard Hitting techno. Sure?

L E T S W E E N I T U P (because that's what I did over break.)
