RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: The Gwedin/Sub Law Research Thread

I didn't listen to much of each song, but enough to form an opinion.

The first one is interesting, a sea shanty with a metal twist (Well, my definition of it.) But, I don't see why it's five minutes long. Two or three minutes would suffice.

The second one.... I feel sorry for the singer. Did he try to gargle shards of glass as a kid? Seriously, why would anyone try to sound like that...

The third one sounds nice. Almost like U2. Might come back to it at some point.

I shall also put three songs. A rap about the NSA, a music number from the Price of Egypt, and another Mountain Goats song (ITS DIFFERENT ITS DIFFERENT! Just the singer and his guitar, recorded on a boombox and released on cassettes (And then rereleased on CD and record.))

I'll just post the links now, to slow the eventual onset of strain on the thread. Do what you must.

What was the difference between the first and second song? Sure, the second one was more whiney and noisy, but both are equally unpleasant to me. The last one was nice, nice polyphony going on.

RE: The Gwedin/Sub Law Research Thread

First one is interesting, like Kaizers, if they were a metal band that took from Nordic folk rather than eastern European folk. I like it.

Second one is pretty hard fir me, but there really is some interesting polyphony going on. So, I give it a thumbs up.

Third one... Wold at least used instuments. That's just manipulated static. Can't call it music.

Here's some things I used to like, but not anymore.

This used to be mah jam in 5th grade. The theme song to "Liberty's Kids."

And mah jam in 8th grade. Still like it, but not nearly as much.

RE: The Gwedin/Sub Law Research Thread

WOO FINALLY

Anyway... The first one. The instruments are okay, and the singer is talented, but her delivery is offputting. It's so... clean. Like Christian music. The second one is interesting, it reminded me of the Avatar soundtrack. The third one was messy. Everything blended into each other and I could barely hear the voice. No, bad, production team. Bad.

Screw it. I'm going to bring back banned and retired artists for one post only, but only if I can find something different to offer in their discography, and say why. Feel free to do the same. This thread needs new blood...

http://youtu.be/BZZ_EAr7Ces
"In the Craters of the Moon" by tMG. Please listen to this one all the way through. I'm posting this because the singer's vocal delivery greatly contrasts Celtic Woman's. He's not as good, but it's filled with expression and emotion.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DC8xni1RKuA&feature=kp
"Min Kvite Russer" by Kaizers. I picked it because I hate this song. Simple as that.

I won't give you a third one because this is enough for you to put up with.

The first one was tolerable... The build up was good for sure and everything else was a'ight. Not awesome though.

And that second one. God. He sounded like he was giving childbirth. y so whiny! plus the instruments were boring. glad you dislike it too. :3

Flyleaf - All Around Me

How could I forget Flyleaf. They're pretty different to anything I've posted already so

Arch Enemy - Carry The Cross

casualfaf deathcore shit. Keep in mind the singer is a chick. :3

I'd post more but Firefox is already running ridiculously slow so meh.

The first one... is this Christian rock?!? Ew. I guess it's okay, kinda bland. For Christian rock, it's full of character. Good for them. Now get it away from me.

Good idea moving the thread.

The Major Parkinson songs. Mmmmmm yes. All of them were great but the last one was perfect. Downloading their discography now. The first one by Skambankt was... okay I guess. Nothing special, wasn't terrible, wouldn't listen again though. The second song reminded me of Motorhead for whatever reason and was average at best too. Meh.

Hansgrohe... country rock... I want to hate this song so much but it's catchy af so it gets a pass. xD

Get ready for a few...

Huh. A weird assortment.

First one: Techno metal again? Ugh. There's not even guitars. It's not even cool like it would be. What?
Second one: It's okay, I guess. A standard folk song? There's talent, but...
Third one: This is probably the best in the bunch. It's at least innovative, and she has a really nice voice.
Fourth one: What is this... A club jam rock sort of a thing? Ew, no. Go away. That's not a good thing to do.
Last one: Meh. Just a techno pop thing.

Huh... What do I put... Just some German stuff I've found? Why not.

Second one: Chick was cute af. Song was gay. DING A LING DING DING no that's just bad. I know her from some other song that my old German teacher showed us though kek.

First one: Something's wrong with the production. The piano's too loud, and it's washing out her voice. She sounds good, but a little weepy. Bleh.

Second one: Meh, the vocals are really clean. But it's some nice slow stuff, so...

Third one: Ten minutes long, Sounds like a slower intro to Metallica's "One," he sounds like a rooster.

First one: When you said hip hop I wasn't really expecting this... I have mixed thoughts. The vocals are really nice to be honest. But eh, it still sounds too much like hip hop for me to really get into.

Second one: Hate it. Sounds like normal hip hop. The first one at least was interesting.

Third one: This doesn't really sound like hip hop at all. Sounds really distorted. I kinda like it. But it's too slow to really get into like the noise I usually listen to. :| So pass, I guess.

First one... THE MUSIC IS CLASING WITH ITSELF. MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY THAT DOES NOT DO WITH THAT. THATS A NO NO. -10000/10

Second one... ANGRY JOE!!! How can I give this a bad rating? But, that's the only thing I really like about it, so... 5/10

Third one... wow... this is kinda artsy... Didn't expect this... It's pretty, and that's the best thing I can say. Maybe it would be a good intro to a musical? 4/10.

You know what? Let's do YouTubers who make music this time... Particularly, people who's music I enjoy less than their videos, even if it's still good.

First one I'll post two versions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI2-dYE-dn0 "The Promise" by Emma Blackery (Electronic Remix) (I prefer the vocal delivery on this one. If you pick one, do this one.)

Oh, the projects are always fun.

First song: Gay. Comments section: Even gayer.
Electronic version: Better. Still gay.
Second: It's funny because this is how most pop songs sound.
Third: Meh. Rap. What can I say.

That was a hard bunch of songs to comment on properly.

HERE WE GO

STARTING OFF WITH SOME OF MAH DSBM
Try look past what you consider to be awful howling and just go with the mood of the song. Be depressed.

First one: The sadness in the instruments isn't the sadness in the vocals. And the vocals. -2/10
Second one: Like Wold. As art, 9/10. As music, 0/10
Third one: OH IVE HEARD ANOTHER VERSION OF THIS ONE. Didn't care for that one either. 5/10 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CGIii_eTOk)
Fourth one: BARRAGHRA HAGHAG HAGAHA. RA RA SGHAUUAHOI. 3/10. (Or "This is....huh, WOW! AARRRORORROROROROR AAROAORAORAOROROROARROAROROROROR AARORRORORORRO WARRRRR WARRRR ARRRORORRORORORORORRO")

First one: I am not a nigger. Don't give me rap, cracker.
Second one: That was just lame... There wasn't that much going on, even. Boring.
Third one: When he started screaming I was prepared for LE METALCORE. That was what I got. Get this shit out of my face. Even if it's funny. -9999999999/10

Right...

The Gwedin/Sub Law Research Thread

First one: So far, this is as repetitive as hell. The beat isn't changing at all... This is just the same thing, with minor variations... Why? 2/10
Second one: Well, this is more interesting. Everything is nicely textured, it's changing up, I'm detecting some nice panning... 8/10. If Repo! was more cyberpunk...
Third one: Just some generic metal sounds meshed together. It lacks oomph, it's trying to sound pretty with the distorted guitars, and it's not working too well. 3/10

(Yes, now I'm just rating it.)

Oh, here's something new. I can try to make song choices based on previous songs? You'll see what I mean.
Let me see, the same melody changed slightly through the whole thing... How about Beaks of Benevola by Major Parkinson? The Wheelbarrow is a more accurate comparison, but that's not on YouTube and also eight minutes long. You have to listen to it for a bit, though, so keep that in mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsP0blbVv3E

The second one... Have to go with MP again. Sorry, I Am Erica has that same complexity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsP0blbVv3E

Third one... Well, that one has scale but lacks oomph. What's something that has that scale, that pretty sound, and a bit of punch? tMG, Michael Meyers Resplendent. Sorry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlA1yyWVoGU

A bit of a departure, but it's an interesting little thing to do...

First one: ayyy i really like this one. The chick has a really nice voice that uh... "contrasts" well with the dude's voice, i guess.
Second: this song's actually really average except for the chorus which is pretty good because of the complexity i'd assume, but other than that, meh.
Third: tMG... i'm bored as fuck
oh jesus that voice the guy sounds like a kid
those instruments don't even sound good with the vocals

seriously what is this shit

First one: What the hell... That's just not good at all. Holy shit, it doesn't mesh well with itself at all. Maybe if this sounded more clean I could jive with it. 6/10, simply for being intriguing.

Second one: bumbum bumbum bumbum bumbum bumbum... wut. Wait... this is actually pretty interesting. I'm going to give this a thumbs up, even though it's pretty repetitive. 7/10

Third one: No, after that intro, just no. And is their singer a sentient pig? -10/10. So bad that the Bind Torture and Kill is now a 5/10, just because the badness of this song cannot be self contained.

Some nice non tonal music...

Holy shit it's like I'm talking to a corpse right now.

How have you been? SS has been dead, and I haven't been active much at all.

I'm actually wearing a Chelsea Wolfe shirt right now. I got to see her in concert and it was great. We even chatted for a little bit after the show.
