RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RLA teacher violates Code of Conduct

My teacher has been caught.

After reading the West Virginia Code of Conduct (teacher edition) I found that she was violating several rules of the Code.

The rules she was violating were:

4.2.3. maintain a safe and healthy environment, free from harassment, INTIMIDATION, BULLYING, substance abuse, and/or violence, and free from BIAS and discrimination.

4.2.4. create a culture of caring through UNDERSTANDING and support.

4.2.5. immediately intervene in any code of conduct violation, that has a negative impact on students, in a manner that preserves CONFIDENTIALITY and the DIGNITY of each person.

On 4.2.3
You are not to intimidate students into doing anything. This applies to the pledge of allegiance, the WESTEST pledge, or censor speech you just don't like. In fact, everything.

On 4.2.4
She would always say that "If you get novice (lowest WESTEST score) you haven't been here" instead of understanding and trying to help those who do get novice. Instead she just practically says "Your fault, I did my job!" regardless of how well she taught or if you have trouble 'learning'.

On 4.2.5
This means you don't say "Shame on you" in front of a full classroom. Simple as that. You don't yell at a student from across the room, either. You go up to them and handle it without attracting attention, retaining confidentiality and dignity.

So my teacher broke the rules. Any comments on what to do or thoughts?

Hm, there should be some way to try and open up an investigation. Since she broke state law, technically you could take it to the state, however I'd bring it up to the education board of your county first. However I think there should be somewhere on a state website in which it gives you steps for reporting it.

Do as I always suggest.

Report her to her superiors.
If they do nothing, report her and them to an administrator.
If THEY do nothing, report the whole lot of them in court. And by report, I of course mean sue them for all they're worth.

I have the feeling she's not the only one who breaks the rules. I might show this thread to J. Schwamm over on G+, see if this sort of thing is common.

Justin weighed in:

Quote:I'd encourage the OP to find out a number of things before proceeding. First, how has the Code actually been interpreted, either in administrative hearings or in court? Second, what sanctions and penalties actually apply for violations? Has anyone ever succeeded with a claim of a Code violation, and if so, what were the circumstances? I have a suspicion that it would be difficult to find an attorney to take on a case like that, especially in the absence of documentary evidence. But at the same time, I want to applaud the OP for taking a stand.

Consider his advice!
