RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Nebraska School’s ‘Ludicrous’ Advice for Bullying Victims Sparks Parent Outrage

Quote:Fifth grade students at Zeman Elementary School in Lincoln, Neb., were recently sent home with a “flyer” outlining how they should handle bullies. The instructions were apparently deemed so ridiculous by parents that the school district quickly issued an apology and the “inaccurate information” was pulled.

That was after the nine “rules” for dealing with bullies went viral, of course.

Here are some of the more questionable ones:

• Rule #3 Do not be afraid.
• Rule #4: Do not verbally defend yourself.
• Rule #7: Do not tell on bullies.
• Rule #8: Don’t be a sore loser
• Rule #9: Learn to laugh at yourself and not get “hooked” by put-downs.

You can read the full list, along with their descriptions in the photo below:

After seeing parents’ reaction to the flyer, Lincoln Public Schools issued an apology on its Facebook page.

As noted in the embedded Facebook post above, the school linked to another worksheet on bullying, which includes tips like “contact a school staff member” and “do not minimize or make excuses for bullying behaviors.”

Many Facebook users were still not completely satisfied after the apology.

“That list of 9 rules for dealing with bullies was hands down the worst advice any person could give to another,” one user wrote. “That it was an ‘educator’ giving it to elementary age children is just beyond the pale. ‘Don’t tell on bullies… would we keep our friends if we tattled on them?’ – Seriously?!”

“Sorry. This is not a learning opportunity. This is a show of complete incompetence. 1970 called, they want their flier back,” another commented.

Others wanted an explanation as to why the “ludicrous” flyer even made it home in the first place.

"If you think I look like a nerd, you should see my dad"-WUT? If my son/daughter got such a pamphlet, I'd give the idiot who wrote it a black eye before tossing him out a window.

Brainiac's mental processing of the rules"
1-Refuse to get mad cause bully controls you.
B:How about I get mad, and beat the crap out of you. Then we can decide who controls who.
2-Treat the person who is being mean as if they are trying to help you
B:Of course they're helping me. They're helping me release my anger by becoming a punching bag for my fists of fury.
3-Do not be afraid
B:The one thing they probably got right, since the bully should be shitting himself when he sees me.
4-Do not verbally defend yourself
B: Ranting
5-Do not attack
B: Noo ..... Stabhead
6-If someone physically hurts you, just show you are hurt; do not get angry
B: Do I look like some sissy coward to you? LOOK AT THIS BEARD YOU FOOL!
7-Do not tell on bullies
B:Right, because first you must break their pathetic fingers. Then you can tell on them.
8-Don't be a sore loser
B:Why must we lose? Kick the bastard in the crotch, then piss on him!
9-Learn to laugh at yourself and not get "hooked" by put-downs

Nebraska School’s ‘Ludicrous’ Advice for Bullying Victims Sparks Parent Outrage

This, is without a doubt the most stupid flyer in the world. Just when I thought people couldn't become more stupid....

It's basically telling you to sit back and do nothing but show that you are hurt. Wow what a great defense against bullies... :/

If a Bully attacks you in ANY way, you SHOULD defend yourself, verbally or physically.

"Do not tell on the Bully" In fact, just LET yourself be bullied, telling on them won't help at all. Nope. Nothing good in sight after telling on them.

Idiots....

The flyer should come with a smaller flyer that solves its problems in three easy steps:

Step #1: Disregard all information within previous flyer.
Step #2: Punch bullies through the face. Yes, through.
Step #3: Punch whoever wrote previous flyer through the face.

Naturally, something you don't see every day. When it comes to bullying, though, for me, all notions of "pacifism" are forgotten; what goes on between a bully and his would-be victim is between them, and zero-tolerance policies prevent the victim from fighting back. This makes the policymakers, and all who support them, bullies as well. Bullies are made to be punching bags; adversity of this variety in particular can only be met with a swift fist.

What happens when you don't fight bullies conventionally? They take even worse abuse from horrible institutions like the schools, the government, or worst of all, the media. Only by beating them up can you simultaneously spare them from this fate while at the same time teaching them a lesson in pain.

Yeah, however I'm kinda forced to be a pacifist. Mainly because I lack the ability to actually fight back(I'm 95 lbs....)

In our current system, you wouldn't be able to, even if you knew how to fight. And what's bad about zero tolerance is that it makes bullies no less able to attack you; many are hurting already (but not in the way they need to, considering they think it's okay to prey on the "weak") and don't care what kind of trouble they get into.

RE: Nebraska School’s ‘Ludicrous’ Advice for Bullying Victims Sparks Parent Outrage

The one that breaks my heart a little is "Don't be a sore loser."

One piece of advice I might give which is a little unorthodox is that sometimes you have to have the courage to fight even when you know you're going to lose. Just make it hard work for someone to hurt you. If it gets physical try to bite, go for the testicles, poke at the eyes, and so on. And even if you lose bad, fight again every time it happens. I know this won't work in all situations but it will back off most people.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Look up some Bujinkan Ninjutsu moves... you can take down people much bigger than yourself without needing any force if you do it right. It's all about getting them off balance. I'm learning this stuff now... it's pretty awesome.

Aikido also works. Basically you use another's momentum and strength against them.

Nebraska School’s ‘Ludicrous’ Advice for Bullying Victims Sparks Parent Outrage

Personally I prefer to use a mixture of boxing, wrestling, and grappling against a bully. It shows them I'm not to be fucked with since I'm a jack of all trades at various forms of self defense. But seriously what fucktard made these rules? It only encourages bullying and makes the victim defenseless and if the victim fights back they're given the role of the bully. Schools really need to put themselves in a child's or teen's or whatever shoes and see how corrupted this system is. What use is the 6th amendment if the student isn't given a fair trial in school?
