RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

In which night runs down her computer poops today

Ok so heres what happened.

This morning I started my computer, left for about an hour and a half to take care of plants and take some pictures around the yard.

Then I come back and my computer is running all extra slow. And I get a windows saying the unresponsive program shit and blah blah blah. I'm running windows 7 at this point. But i click to end the program and all the stuff for windows disappears. So I'm like fuck. And i turn off my computer, turn it back on.

"A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+Alt+del to restart"

Ok, i did that, same thing. Over and over same thing. I did that for about 20 minutes until my friend finally got back to me.

He told me to put Ubuntu on a flash drive. Ok, took a while becuase my dad's computer is SLOW AS FUCK. But I did that.

I put the flash drive into my computer and I start it.

I start the process to install ubuntu. I got to the page that says "preparing to install Ubuntu" And it stayed there. For almost a fucking hour.

So then I clicked quit. And I got to the desk top or whatever. At this point I'm like, hold on. Very confused, how did i get here without finishing the install? I decided to say fuck it and not really bother with it. It seemed fine to me.

But then I took out the flash drive. And shortly after doing that the side bar thingy and the top thingy disappeared. Kind of like what happened before with windows.

So I restarted.

"A disk read error occurred
Press ctrl+Alt+del to restart"

Fuck.

I repeated what i did earlier, excpet this time i didn't give it much time to prepare because I already figured it wasn't gonna get past that. And now I'm back here.

I have a toshiba satellite L305-S5921

And when I try to look at my hard drive i get a bunch of this stuff
Quote:Error mounting /dev/sdc2 at /media/ubuntu/84FC7D7BFC7D67F6: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=999,gid=999,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdc2" "/media/ubuntu/84FC7D7BFC7D67F6"' exited with non-zero exit status 18: Failed to write lock '/dev/sdc2': Resource temporarily unavailable

NIGHT SMASH PUNY COMPUTER! NIGHT STRONGEST THERE IS!

I'm serious. Computer manufacturers have an evil master plan of planned obsolescence, and I've only kept my laptop alive so long through dumb luck. You'll either have to buy a new computer (hopefully from a less shifty company - my advice, never buy an HP, because they're the worst of the bunch) or try to jailbreak your current one.

You probably didn't have to close the computer though. You probably just ended the explorer.exe process(which is everything on the desktop). I generally end process tree it when I start up my computer to bash some processes that I don't care for. Then using the task manager, you can re-start it using file>new task>write explorer.exe in box>press enter.

I'm going to go ahead and assume something is wrong with whatever hardware you're system boots from(most likely CD-drive). Or something with the hard drive. I'd try to boot from something else(like a flash drive) but that require modifying BIOS(which is the manufacturer settings for PC before the OS kicks in).

But I'm just an amateur using best-guess method...

Ubuntu can run without installing it to the Hard Drive. It's a try-before-you-install feature of sorts. However it means you can't remove the USB drive.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Puppy however does let you remove the USB drive, due to how the system itself is completely loaded into RAM at startup.

RE: In which night runs down her computer poops today

I'm using ubuntu right now from a flash drive. If i take the flash drive out, it all goes to shit. I'm fairly certain it's because of my hard drive. I can't install it, I'm using it like how Chanku said.

Maybe I'll get that then.

I'm not sure.

I'll be able to get a new hard drive. I'm pretty sure that'll fix it. if not, maybe I can beg my aunt. I just much rather $50 on a hard drive than the $300 my friend says he can build a decent computer for.

Well, if you're loading your OS off a flash drive, you can't remove it..

1.) The error is a tactic from manufacturers to get you to buy newer products.
2.) The Ubuntu shouldn't have taken that long. It took me about half an hour. Try burning it Linux Live USB Creator.
3.) I think it's Times New Roman.

Yeah, sounds like the hard drive is dead. Or needs to be scanned for errors... but it's probably dead. Does it make funky noises?

Since you just went ahead and started installing Ubuntu, there's a good chance you can't recover any files from it now.
