RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The years pass by so much....

To be honest, I'm only 17. I'm not even an adult yet. However, it's occurred to me that I feel this odd feeling of nostalgia.... it feels strange to be honest.

I don't know, I've been looking back at my childhood (which was essentially 1997-2005). To you, it feels rather recent. You say, "damn, I remember this!" or something along those lines. It feels really, really familiar. Sometimes you wish things could go back to the way they were, because you have such a longing for it. You wish you could somehow transport back to that time period and live in it. At least for a few days or so. Explore all the spots that you remember so fondly.

Then, you realize how far the past really is. It barely occurs to you how times were much, much different back then. I mean, back in 2001 (the year I'm so nostalgic for), Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon were airing shows we talk about this day, cell phones were just for calling and texting, computers were a lot slower and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc did not exist at all, music was much different, etc. I actually still find it hard to believe that the parts of my childhood that I so dearly loved are more than a decade ago. The things I grew up with are so far back in the past.

But I think the thing that is more disturbing is when you realize how much you've aged. I mean, remember when you were in elementary school and the 4th and 5th graders were "the big kids". I mean, damn. I haven't seen them in more than a decade, and only God knows what has happened to them. I mean, there are many paths they could've taken. Some may be dead, some may be homeless, some may be married, some may have ended up in difficult circumstances, or they may have been able to become businessmen, economists, musicians, etc. You realize that those teenagers that you saw on those sitcoms or in real life are now fully grown adults in the real world. It really gets to you when those people are now much more older than you.... and then you realize how much older you are, and how much has changed.

Nostalgia can be a weird-ass trip.

RE: The years pass by so much....

I get what your feeling. I turned 18 a few months ago. I was afraid to become an adult because life get's very difficult than. My childhood wasn't all great I mean who's childhood is awesome?
Years of mistreatment and school made me feel bad about my childhood and even being human. My greatest possible fear is old age. You have to leave childhood behind hopefully with your sanity safe from rude and selfish parents and a strict system, than life gets even harder and more miserable when you reach adulthood. You have to earn money just to remain safe, I hope one day money is no more cause it is evil. My grandfather told me every month you have to pay hundreds of dollars just to keep a roof over your head, which is crazy if you ask me. According to my religion, you have to come back to this dreadful earth if you have not fulfilled life's purpose.

The way I feel about 2006 - 2008 (I'm only 13 but the '10s is the worst decade ever as far as the media goes yet it's also the most media-centric and I get bulled because I hate dubcrap.)

RE: The years pass by so much....

Life as an adult can actually be quite enjoyable and worthwhile. It can be hard to believe that ifyou've only known miserable adults, but it's true.

I hope that as a community and network we can help each other move beyond the kinds if lives a lot if our parents model, stuck in negativity and stagnation.

Yes, rent or mortgage payments at least hundreds of dollars per month per person, but there are lots of ways to make that money and have free time and control over your life as a whole. Working can be enjoyable and fulfilling when it's the right fit for you... and when it's driven by purpose, instead of what school is.often driven by...

It can and does get better if you can find your way, and that's a lot more likely with the right allies, mindset, and strategies.

The idea that being an adult has to suck really is a misconception.

I think paying hundreds of dollars, as your grandfather said, is optional. There are always alternate, better ways to live with lesser money. We have a choice, between doing what the majority does or choosing how to live.

Why is money evil? Wasn't it developed for the sake of more effective trade, as a solution to the barter system? You could argue that it leads to exploitation and such, but the people doing the exploitation would only find new ways to exploit, even if money didn't exist.

RE: The years pass by so much....

Thank you for giving me hope Smile

Money is evil because it leads to egocentrism and makes life an extreme challenge and many have died or gone insane because of money.
The fact that money is required to live makes it more of a problematic thing, and money has lead to cruelty from my grandmother because she always shoves it down my throat and hurts me cause of it. Supposed I offered you a place to go where you would be safe and your needs would be met, than I deny you this if you didn't have what I wanted, this would make me a selfish bastard.
I don't know the truth about money but school has a dark truth.

That's horrible...just why does your grandma treat you like that?

As for the next sentence, I think it's fair to demand a price. It's a part of life, you have to give something up to get something better. I suppose I wouldn't blame you if you refused. Life has a way of balancing things out like that.

My grandma I have no idea why she bears such hatred for me. I believe it is because I'm not like my older sister whom she cares about more, she always claiming ''Antisha did this how come you didn't or why can't you be like your sister?'' My grandmother despises me for my failure to do as she says and sometimes, it's my intelligence to question and examine things that make her mad, ironically she believes I am good for being smart (school must have made me that way she assumes) but she dislikes my true source of intelligence (imagination and curiosity plus examination and exploration, I feel like an outcast cause of it). I still don't agree with money and there must be a better alternative that would certainly work for everyone, where no one will have to fear living in poverty.

I'm 15, so there's sadly no time in my life that I really envy and I get no nostalgia, yet, and I hope it stays that way, because the Maker knows I need no more reason to fuck things up.

@xcriteria: This thread wasn't really about being scared about being an adult. Merely, it's purely a reflection I've experienced and realizing that god damn, the years really have changed, a lot, and the fact that I'm about to be an adult myself, and kinda finding it hard to believe that people you saw who were teens growing up are adults themselves, and the past is more farther than you think.

Most adults are miserable because work has become their life, and free time/vacation is just earned time.

They put themselves in a tight box, then complain about how tight it is. Then they put the lid on, and complain about how dark it is.
