RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Conservative School, Taking away our rights

My school is in Collin County, Texas and Collin County always votes republican. My parents are from New York so they are liberal. I'm constantly barred from saying the most innocent of phrases, like "crap" and "that sucks". My friend got a warning for saying "for gods sakes", because the teacher is very religious, although ironically my friend is a christian catholic. The teachers always say school is not part of America, and the rights dont apply. I am so pissed what do I do? I even keep a copy of the constitution on my binder but they don't listen. Huh >:(

School is always gonna be like that.

I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.

If you need tech support, PM me. Everything's free of charge. I use Teamviewer in case it's needed.

I can only think that maybe the ACLU will be the only people who might be able to help, if they are willing to help. It is texas after all

School is not part of America? They're not part of any country on the 2 American continents?

This further confirms my suspicion that indeed, schools really are mini fascist states.

For anyone who remembers me going on an archive binge: Thank you all. I know I ended it being a drama queen, I don't really agree with the ideology anymore, and I'm really not the same person I was (I went through a neopagan phase!) but still this site was the first online community I was in. I graduated from school and turned 18. Time flies. KFC Nyan Cat, June 20, 2019.

RE: Conservative School, Taking away our rights

I was never in Collin, but I got a lot of this same thing when I was bouncing around the D/FW suburb districts (and Alvarado). Didn't know how to change anything so I mostly just tried to stay under the radar. Except for that time I saw someone get screamed at by a teacher for not standing for the pledge. The next day ~someone~ stuck summaries of West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnett all over the halls. :>

You might check over that code of conduct book and see if religious blasphemy is mentioned at all, because it doesn't seem to me that staff should be handing out warnings based on their personal sensibilities.

RE: Conservative School, Taking away our rights

There is a process called entropy that is used to describe the tendency of things to fall apart.

http://sciphilos.info/docs_pages/docs_Go...n_css.html

Without discipline people fall apart as well. The problem is that companies, governments, churches, and schools all think that it is their responsibility to discipline you as opposed to helping you towards developing self-discipline.

In this way they advance the cause of slavery all the while thinking they are promoting liberty.

You just became an awesome person in my opinion

Wouldn't that also be a violation of a Supreme Court Ruling?

Yeah, there's this though. Apparently the parental opt-out provision constitutes their compliance with the ruling, or else nobody has challenged it as it stands using that ruling. I'm not clear on how it all works.

Even if there is an opt-out provision, if the school doesn't honor the parent's opt out, or doesn't even give them the chance to opt-out then it could be considered violating the ruling....

That is fucked up. Try to challenge them on it, if you challenge them on anything.

RE: Conservative School, Taking away our rights

Your parents should disagree with just about everything they do so talk to them about it. Get some local parents to actually stand for their kids rights!
