"In his recent article, 14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools, Ingvi Hrannar Ómarsson, gives innovative educators, students, and parents some food for thought in their own schools. When I read the article, I couldn't help but think that an excellent activity would be to turn the article into a quiz for school staff, students, and parents. After taking the quiz, they could compare results, see where they are, discuss what is working well, and also figure out some ways to update practice."

My ideal school wouldn't have a single computer. The Internet is a giant jumbled commercial repetitive mess. The deep knowledge is still printed in books on paper and the Internet and educational software is getting worse, not better.

But that's just my opinion. I think school should be mostly silent reading and math practice (with calculators).

But the thing is, I don't want it forced on anyone. Only students who want to learn that way should be there. It has to be a choice. I think it's unfortunate that this high tech interactive group work model that's so en vogue these days is FORCED on everybody. A lot of kids like quiet and solitude. Not all but enough to be relevant.

I think it's important to keep in mind that not every student will learn well in every learning environment and with every method. It's also important to keep in mind that the internet can truly be a deep source of good learning, and with more information than what can be found in many books, or even many books put together.

I learned about the US military's clandestine African buildup. I've also found an article about the ageism in the Silicon Valley tech industry, and why some part of the internet that may seem informative are indeed a 'jumbled commercial repetitive mess', as is mostly the case with the Huffington Post and its financing. This was all in the last week or so.

There's good shit on the internet, you just have to find it. Books don't have hyperlinks, either (which can make for a more compact reading experience I admit, even if they do mention other books).

Computer software can also help learning, but it should indeed be used and managed right. And sometimes you don't even need the internet for it! (Wish I got to play SimCity in school.)

Actually, in my middle school there was one engineering-type class that got to play sim city. That school had its faults (many of them specific teachers), but was waaay better than my HS.

I guess I have to admit that there's information that's only on paper and some that's only online.

We need the freedom to choose. As teachers and students. I think that's something we both agree on.

I'll go in more depth about my last school, circa 2007-2009:

Computer use was not relegated to a single room, because while we had a computer room we also had Macintosh laptops we charged in our homerooms and took with us throughout the day. There were racks in the hall to store them during PE and such. They were rather fun to use, too, even if the privilege of taking them home was often used as leverage.

The classrooms were isolated, to varying degrees.

There was school-wide WiFi, thanks to Apple bus ports on the walls.

Student-owned devices (i.e. cell phones, tablets, laptops) were banned. They were allowed in the building, but they had to stay in lockers during school hours.

Tech was largely dictated. There was an asshole IT guy who helped us set up student e-mail accounts (I didn't use mine much), and software/projects were chosen by teachers.

The teachers didn't share. They may have shared between themselves, but I didn't see much evidence, and I saw no evidence of sharing with the outside world via social media.

The school, hell the city's schools didn't have a social media presence. I may be wrong, but then again I would have heard of it if I was.

The cafeteria food was spotty. Much of the ala carte was unhealthy, although there were some healthy choices. 'Hot lunch' (ala carte food was hot too, folks) was the same thing we ate since the third grade, and it was a balance between healthy and...less healthy.

It definitely started before 9 AM. We had to wait outside even if it was below freezing, but not if it was raining or snowing heavily, so there's that.

I can't recall having looked into this, but I'm pretty sure the city's school website(s) and much of the banners were outsourced.

Apart from WiFi and board games, the school library only had books. I'm lucky it was a rather large library to begin with, though.

Students were grouped by age, via the grade system.

I don't know if the teachers got to select what they teached, but we students certainly got little say in our subjects.

Education quality was indeed measures by those goddamn standardized tests. I explicitly remember some of my teachers saying to their students (including me) that they had to 'teach for the test'.

Yeah. We're outdated as hell. Interestingly, both my current college and the school I attended for 12 years have the same score.


And I hate it when quizzes have a submit button but make you count up your score anyway! Shouldn't there be a tally programmed into the quiz? At least tell us that we have to count our own scores at the top.
