RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Bug Totalitarian Govt. In Schools

For those ofyou that say my school sounds like blighted hell, it is definitely going that way. How?

Well, to start we have a self-admittedly fascist principal who said we should live in a fascist state and thought Mein Kampf was "pretty good stuff". There has been a surge in suspensions recently due to a sort of unorganized homework strike where people aren't doing their homework and are getting Saturday School and Internals for it. Even the people who usually dont get suspended are getting them now for things that should not involve such punishment. The principal may have something to do with it.

Next, we have AR. This program tries to keep your reading within a seemingly large amount of books, but if you dare read something not in AR at school, you are punished in someway. For an example, I was told to read a different book for reading The Communist Manifesto while waiting on a new AR book, simply because it was not in the AR list. They do not care about the knowledge you gain from a book, but only the fact you did as they asked. And if you refuse to read (or in the list), you are punished with two 0s in your reading and language arts grade.

Also, dress code controls what you wear to an extent. We have a no-short-shorts rule, a no neck key chain rule, and other rules for "Dressing For Success" that bans stupid things because "gang members do it" or "You might have a gun". Bullshit.

We have the controlling of free speech far beyond teacher limits. For example, if I say "threatening to do X is one thing but threatening to kill someone is completely different" a teacher will step in and say you cant use the word kill in school. Listen to the context. Also, you cannot discuss student rights or even what happened in the principals office, even if someone asked. Its "inappropriate for school" when in fact it is not.

We have constant surveillance. Teachers see and hear in every inch of the halls, and cameras to replace them during class. Hell, I think there is cameras in the restrooms. I have fact to prove it. Drug dogs invade privacy of everyone because one or two people who had drugs. Even if it keeps us safe,
"One who would sacrifice a little liberty to gain a little safety deserves neither and will lose both". Even homework invdes your life.

Yeah, with all the control of rights and thought, definitely sounds totalitarian to me.

0_0 Your school seems like a totalitarian shithole. Your principal seems like a fascist, AR seems like pure bullshit, Dress code is bullshit, and you guys have freaking drug dogs.... And the supression of free speech.... Huh.

Anyway to get out of there, homeschooling? Democratic school? Unschooling?

Holy barnacles. Yeah, your school sounds like something akin to a dictatorship the United States and European Union would accuse of human rights violations. Okay, not the same, but it echoes that.

How has the front on the ACLU gone? If they're of any relevance anymore, I wonder how the NYRA (National Youth Rights Association) could respond to this. Oh, and TheLiberal, have you heard of VICE? Getting in contact with VICE on getting raw footage on some of these schools is an idea that we've kicked the tires on in the IRC at various times.

Is this a charter school? Public schools aren't exactly great places but they're not THIS bad. Tell us the name of the school. And yes, GTFO ASAP.

Actually, I used to go to a charter school until 5th grade. Yeah, they can be quite strict, though I've never heard of a school this bad.

Your school has all the characteristics, of what makes a school, turn into a prison. A case like this demands the ACLU

"Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have. The course of history shows as government grows, liberty decreases. " --Thomas Jefferson

RE: Totalitarian Govt. In Schools

holy shitbiscuits man. I feel so bad for you, dude. :/ My elemntary school did something like that and it freaking blew. Hated every moment of it. The kids who met their "reading level" were given an ice cream party at the end of each quarter while those who didn't got to stay in the classroom and do nothing. Once, when I was in the 4th grade, only like 6 kids got to go to the party and another teacher came in and shamed us, saying "All of you are supposed to be there!"

"No matter what I do, it'll probably forever remain a pipe dream that will never come true,
but the fire burning in my heart cannot be doused by anyone.
Even if the black rain falling from the sky drenches me completely and doesn't stop,
I will never allow the fire in my heart to be extinguished. That, is my 'pride'."
