RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

This is the most lame field trip ever.
A few days ago, they finally gave us flyers for the 8th grade trip, and it completely sucks. The best they can do for us 8th graders, the ones who have endured the blighted hell of their crappy school the longest, is sending us to a family entertainment center in the middle of who-the-hell-knows. The place includes unlimited DJ/dance floor, 1 hour of bowling, and 2 measly slices of cheese pizza, a Sprite, and a bag of potato chips. All for 20 bucks.
Wow.
In previous years, they actually sent 8th graders to Universal's Islands of Adventure, but now the best they can do is take us to a crappy FAMILY FUN CENTER. (kinda sucks when compared to Universal...) I wasn't going to go on the field trip either way (not a fan of amusement parks) but it still blows because if I did change my mind and want to go at least it's somewhere with a lot of food and rides that I don't get to go to very often at all. :/
If this is what they're giving us then I can only imagine where the 7th and 6th graders are going. *sigh*
I know they probably couldn't afford taking us to an amusement park this year but they surely could've done better than this garbage.

It's probably broken, too. Gee, at least my 6th grade class could afford a trip to Washington DC and a bus with non-working WiFi, but THAT? REALLY? THAT COSTS TWENTY BUCKS? FOR ME, THE TRIP WAS FREE! THAT IS GRADE-S BULLSHIT.

I went to Washington D.C. when I was in eighth grade. It wasn't as fun as I would have liked.

95% of field trips I've been on sucked horribly. The only fun one I recall is during senior year when they sent us to a cider mill for the day and we got to do pretty much whatever we wanted. T'was good times.

RE: This is the most lame field trip ever.
Those trips to fancy places require chaperones. And being a chaperone burdens you with responsibility and loss of time. No one wants to do it! In my case I won't do it. No way. My time off is too precious and if some kid gets caught having sex or smoking weed someone is bound to try to find a way to scapegoat it on me. Usually the school is asking for people to do this for free. Ha! I would need around $2000 a day to even consider it.
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

WTF??
How are you supposed to crack open a notebook on a ride without papers flying everywhere and getting lost?
Hello, traveler.
This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.
Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"
Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.
People are allowed to change their views.
Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.
If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

You know, in 4th grade, they were supposed to take us to COSI. And every other year, the 4th graders were allowed to go. But no, not this year. They took us to the freaking nature center instead of a 3 hour trip of fun and actually enjoying learning. Nope, they take us to walk in forests to see nothing but plants. Then, in fifth grade, we were supposed to go to Camp Butler, spend the night there, and have an awesome time. BUT NO, THEY HAVE TO TAKE US TO SOME FREAKING MILITARY AND HISTORY OUTDOOR MUSEUM. Not to mention it was super cold and miserable. They specifically screwed the schedules of our group of kids. I'll always hate Mann elementary, those little morons. I can't believe some dipshit gave them a blue ribbon.

RE: This is the most lame field trip ever.
A field trip is the institutional equivalent of sticking a kid in front of the TV because you don't know what to do with him. Entertainment and amusement (even lame entertainment and amusement) is meant to be a pacifier.
This is because an institution cannot relate to you, you can only be processed by it. You might be amused or entertained. You could even learn something. However, these are almost incidental to keeping you compliant so that you can be assimilated.
Carry a book you enjoy with you when you go on such a trip so that you can pursue your own interests if things get too lame.

Stephen my man, we'd like to see that project anytime soon.
As for field trips? The ones I took earlier on in my schooling were enjoyable. Then they started charging money for some of them. I was lucky in that I got to go to the same astronomical science camp in the sixth grade (for free) I attended before I started the fourth(which cost money that time). Both times didn't end on the best of notes, but I liked it anyhow. (Only time I've ever made television, incidentally.)
I can't blame people like Hellhound for feeling like a worn-out Soviet citizen on a cheap state vacation, the way things are these days.

My highschool did something similar to this. It was for some physics classes. I forgot much of it, but I do remember that the students have to do an assignment, writing about how each of the rides they've been on relates to motion or some other physics concept.

I don't really see how, considering people complain about stuff they aren't participating in all the time. It's ust stating an opinion.

In 5th grade i went to Philly. The ride up was kinda long (I live in essex county), but overall, the trip was pretty fun. We could go anywhere in Philly (as long as we had an adult with us).

RE: This is the most lame field trip ever.
Best field trip I went on at school was to the Baltimore Aquarium, partly because there were no follow-up worksheets or tour guides--just a day of exploring the aquarium at our own pace.
Since then, I've only been to some random swamp next to an amusement park for a very dull mandatory environmental studies trip and *gasp* the local fitness center!
Oh, and we did go to our state's Holocaust Museum one year. That was interesting. And very sad.
