RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Sad Why do I have to do this

Homework that is. So many useless pages of homework, so much time, trees, ink, thinking power and mental stability WASTED on these useless shitty booklets that mean absolutely NOTHING. But you "have" to do them or else you will "fail" both in school and in life.
Right?
RIGHT!?!
NOPE.
I DON'T THINK SO!
What the hell does this have to do with my future career? If anything it's only hurting whatever I'm going to do by restricting my time thinking about and doing REAL things, and replacing that time with mind meltingly boring worksheets that have no value whatsoever. I have PLANS for things. If I had any fucking time to work on them that isn't filled with either homework or mentally recuperating from weeks worth of endless homework I would have executed them already! My brain has had enough of this. I've already just walked out of class a few times because I just can't handle the boredom. I could handle the school day if I didn't already know that it wouldn't end at the last bell but instead infect the rest of my day like a fucking pathogen.
The best part of my day is when I "disrupt" the class with things that make everybody laugh and from what I can see makes their day better, so at least I can do that.
But times like right now, when I'm stuck with questions that make no sense that are about a book that I hate.

I feel like beating the shit out of not a random person but somebody in particular that has constantly annoyed me with his ridiculous level of incompetence since I was like 4.
If enough people want to know what my "plans" are I'll make a post about it but I can't right now because I have to finish this SHITTY BOOKLET that I'll probably just end up getting the answers for from my friends anyways. If they even have the answers.. the funny thing is in this class I'm usually the one that everyone else copies off of because they hate it too but the difference is they're parents don't make them do it like mine do.

All that was built up from years.. I haven't really released all of it ever so it feels good, the thing is that isn't all of it but the rest are stories for other threads.

Now I'm off to waste another hour staring at this page thinking about absolutely nothing... bye.

RE: Why do I have to do this

You are so right, my grandma causes my sister grief over homework and I think homework is just a trick to get us to care more about school. School has little to do with your future life as the majority of workers found out that many things they learned at school they didn't need after all.

Welcome again, Wikiwoo!

Yeah, homework is quite boring and pointless, and often irrelevant in many people's lives. Just out of curiosity, what grade are you in?

Homework sucks. 99.99 percent of it is completely useless to you :/ It's funny how we all stress about homework, yet it doesn't really teach a lot of things.

I'm in Grade 9, and the funny thing is I didn't finish that sheet just like I thought I wouldn't, and then I got to school and almost nobody had it finished either lol, except for like one person who we all copied off of.

Why do I have to do this

Oh yeah and then yesterday after expressing my dismay about doing the homework to my parents and saying that it was useless and whatnot, my dad had a half hour discussion with me about how me not learning anything at school or from homework is "my fault" and how school is the most important thing in my life until I'm like 25.. I don't want to be in school and college till then.. if I am I'll probably jump off of whatever dorm I'm living in Q_Q

I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.

If you need tech support, PM me. Everything's free of charge. I use Teamviewer in case it's needed.

RE: Why do I have to do this

The first step I'd suggest is begin (or continue) educating yourself about different ways to think about education.

If you can, even share some of these with your parents or teachers and see what they say (especially Ken Robinson.)

Videos that come to mind:

(1) Have you seen Changing Education Paradigms?

Hidden stuff:

(2) You might also want to check out Chris Lehman's talk:

(3) And, this spoken word video from Suli Breaks:

Hidden stuff:

Thoughts on those?

On the plus side, quite a few people are interested in transforming education to be learner-centric... including educators. Many people realize education needs to change, to meet the needs of people in the 21st century.

Also, check out this 2-minute clip from Learning Creative Learning 2, and MIT Media Lab-based edu-MOOC (massively open online course) that just started.

Watch on YouTube

In other words, change is in the air. Unfortunately, it's obviously not in the air where you are. :(

In order to change this, it's crucial that people trapped in ill-fitting school situations, like you describe, refine your stories and share them... while learning more about the alternative ways to do teaching and learning that people are already putting into practice in some places.

On a brighter note, what would you do if you didn't have to deal with school? What do you want to do despite it?

I would start working on expanding on all the ideas that I've had that I can't act on because of the lack of time. I am actually bursting with ideas that I REALLY want to do something with..
