RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Bug I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

We should rebel sometime soon. We actually should. I don't know what month and day to do it. Like a walk out or something. Opinions?

Not the first time I've heard this.

Open rebellion, in a nutshell, does not promote our cause and, in the long run, will only inspire legislation or bureaucracy dedicated to suppressing the rights of students further. To add credibility to our movement, we need to gain the trust of the people instead.

Does this make sense?

Yes it does. But how do we teenagers who supposedly "lie all of the time" in the eyes of adults gain the trust of the people?

I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

We don't have to collectively tell the public what we want. Instead, we network.

Our ideas are being shared, as we speak, throughout the Internet. More people are reading what we have to say, and some are writing about it. Eventually our society will adapt these ideas into the public consciousness, and by power of suggestion, people will propose changes to the school system.

The problem is, at the rate we're going, things aren't getting done fast enough, and there's no guarantee that people understand and even less of a guarantee that they agree.

In general, a rebellion of sorts isn't really a good idea and might not even be effective anyway. In fact, if this is violent, it might be counterproductive.

I think simply making the cause more popular will win in the end. At this point, we really need to step up our game with the site and all that. Soul has gotten DSL now, so she may update the homepage and forums soon enough.

Yes to DoA and Hans. We already went through a 'RISE UP AND FIGHT!' phase as a site(corny stories and all), and while I can't blame others for feeling the same, it won't work.

Networking, talking with adults (especially educators and administrators, policymakers, and mental health professionals, first to get them to see our points and the facts and then to discuss the matters in detail), sharing our stories, spreading the message and talking about what to do about it all will help our movement gain acceptance. We're far from the only group of people who are disdainful of the current state of public education. We just need to connect and grow. Violence has its uses, but not in this case. xcriteria will inevitably post in this thread, and he can expound on our replies.

I suppose a formal protest, at the right time, could be effective. Police sure like to arrest protesters though, and what if some of the arrested include teenagers? What will the suburban, middle-class mothers of those teenagers think when they realize their prodigys' clean records are soiled because they wanted to change society for the better? How the Hell will they get into Yale then?! Besides not going to Yale and telling their parents about how shit the situation really is (which includes college to an extent), that is. Basically, it'll be even riskier for legal minors to actively protest.

I wonder what Rebelnerd is doing.

While I have wanted to protest, I have seen that they are ineffective espcially for teens, who are still 'tied' to their parents. There was a nice little rebellion going on in a school a few friends were apart of (and some of whom participated), however it fell apart, I believe due to the intervention of parents. Rebellion is not going to work sadly, at least not know.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

RE: I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

G+ share of this thread: link. Check it out, leave a comment, and let's take steps to further connecting with people who are already in the G+ community, on G+, and beyond.

Real-time conversion, like through chat and Google Hangouts is one step to take... including with potential allies.

I also think sharing our stories in places like the Learning Creative Learning 2 forums could go a long way toward gaining awareness and respect from educators... some of which might be open to taking more steps to support our cause. Among other things, MIT tends to be associated with credibility, particularly their Media Lab.

My SS thread with links to the course page and forums, as well as a key hangout they did last year:

Learning Creative Learning 2 (LCL2) - MIT open course

(The course starts in three days, but the forums are open now.)

I've also set up a prototype site and forum to bridge conversations with others, including parents. It's got a ways to go, but I'm looking to collaborate on improving it. If you haven't seen it, PM me or ask in chat.

And, of course, SoulRisers pending changes to School Survival are likely to get more people staying here, and perhaps make it easy to introduce SS to friends and others.

One more key step

I encourage everyone to write up your story, including your current scenarios, past situations, interests and plans for the future. Why is school not a good fit for you? How do your parents view school? How would you like education and educators to help you learn, grow, and accomplish your goals?

Many of you have written parts of these things on the forums, but having a story in more polished form for sharing elsewhere could help us more quickly introduce what we're talking about to others.

I'll work on this, as well.

Any other thoughts on steps we can take?

When was Rebelnerd last around? I'd like to see what he thinks of what we've done with the place.

And xcriteria that's a good idea regarding stories. Maybe I'll get around to mine on Screenstorming. And I've mentioned how I plan to invite others later on.

Agreed, and thank you for sharing - this could use additional discussion.

Various anti-school (and I use the term to mean the current, ineffective system, not the concept in general) groups are starting to find each other through Google+. More people are reading my anti-school blog. And finally, I myself have introduced anti-school sentiments to various unrelated online communities in a way that flows into conversation.

Through networking, we are making people think more about this moral issue. We're closer to a breakthrough than ever.

Chat messages and comments alone won't promote the cause credibly.

And whilst people won't automatically check the age, they will assume. When I first showed this site to elders, they assumed it was made by people who were 12 years old and merely annoyed at large amounts of homework, though when I asked them they said they did believe education could improve.

And a rebellion is still not the way to do it. It makes us appear as radical anarchists, even if some of us are. I believe representatives in legislative assemblies will work best in the case of a lot of countries; reformists as mayors, Congressmen etc.

Democracy is there, why not use it?

I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

simply walking out of schools would indeed do wonders.

what i believe that people dont get is that authority lies where people think it lies. the schools have no authority if the students dont want them to and if you dont want to be subjected to the mind destroying school system, the schools can do nothing but hopelessly watch as their students simply leave.

a few people doing this would likely have no impact. a great mass of students doing such a thing would cause this system to collapse.

The majority of actions by students have been at the university level where people go to school voluntarily, and most high school walkouts have been isolated incidents. High schoolers are largely apathetic and just want to graduate.

I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

One key path to change, where possible: get parents onboard.

Then, you can literally walk out of the whole system if you choose to.

The question is, what to do next.

Even if you're in school, you can make the most of whatever time you do have control over, to learn, connect, create, get feedback, and in general co-author your life story, rather than just letting the time fly by, or trying to "kill" time.

But, this thread is about change, so let's focus on that.

There are already quite a few teachers, parents, and others out there who would also like to either change how their school works, or walk away and help people learn in a more learner-centric way. The problem is, teachers tend to depend on schools-as-they-are for their paychecks, and parents tend to depend on schools for their "my kid is going to be okay" feelings.

But, there are also many examples out there of people doing education differently, and talk about "the system" tends to miss that reality.

If we get more parents on board, there are all kinds of things we can do.

So, how can we get in dialogue with parents?

I think in many cases, parents will only accept an educational model that involves some experienced adults who can design experiences, provide feedback, and give the parents some indication real learning is happening.

But, there are so many ways we could do that.

My idea: let's get in dialogue over the summer and make it happen for some people, somewhere. Let's end the summer with at least a handful of success stories, where people went from "gotta go back in the fall" to "I got to choose an alternative path."

Who's on board with helping to make that happen?

We have so many allies... more of us need to get in dialogue with them.

I can share the stories and scenarios people post about on School Survival with others, but if more people from here can represent themselves directly, I think it'll go a long way.

And, we need to go beyond dialogue among the many people who already agree education needs to change, and bring others into these conversations... like parents.

That means producing content, interactions, and experiences they can fit into their lives, attention spans, and worldviews.

Remember, education is already completely transformed for some, while others are serving out sentences as prisoners of the past.

Hidden stuff:

See Lisa Nielsen's blog post, Are teachers keeping students prisoners of their past?

And it's not just teachers...

And others don't even have access to education, beyond what their family or village might be able to provide. But that's changing, too, as the planet gets more connected.

Many embroiled in schools-of-the-past have more time over the summer. Let's leverage all that time, and make the days count.

That's what Summer of Connected Learning is about. Please, if you want to transform education, join, engage, ask questions, share your stories, and think about how to get your parents and others in your life involved in these conversations.

I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

Agreed..but there are some people who just don't get it. They refuse to see our point and blind themselves with the belief that a developing brain equals a non-existent or dysfunctional one..There are going to be teenagers who people will use to make their case that we can't think for ourselves, or that stupid "this is a phase" outlook. These people are deluding themselves..and also stupid teens all over the world who make the rest of us look bad. What I'm trying to say is that the intelligent are a minority, specially in the teens. I suppose I'm not optimistic about this. What we could do is appeal for stricter definitions and laws against abuse specifically and try to make other alternatives to school more popular- I don't see the laws making school compulsory being overturned, to be honest, and trying to make school more fun seems useless, because the entire model is structured around the fact that it is not fun.

Making things better for those under the age limit seems the way to go, rather than fighting outright. Again, there are people who'll stay in school just because they have no idea what else to do.Noo There should be a choice, such as "Like school? Stay there. Don't like it? Get out!"

Quote:I suppose a formal protest, at the right time, could be effective.

That's my point #2 right there Smile Those of us who are adults should find ways to make things better for them.

Don't play chess with pigeons-they'll just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut about like they won anyway.

I think it's time for us to do something about the school system.

I feel rebellion similar to that of when Martin Luther King Jr was rallying for equal rights for everyone would be just fine. Non-violent protesting makes it much more likely for us to get our point across without striking fear into the civilian population.

The only time I would see violent protesting as an answer is, in my opinion, if the government or police tried to get involved and forcefully threaten us with guns in hands. Especially if we were unarmed and they fired upon us. Then, the violence would start, as they threw the first stone. That's when I would advocate violence on any level, but NEVER to the civilians that are innocent of the crimes of the government.

The old saying goes that history repeats itself. Well, I do see a revolution coming again, or a civil war. And, if enough people join the bandwagon through the Streisand Effect we will have on impacting the internet, I could see this vision becoming reality.
