RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

An Experiment

Okay, this is a little sign up sheet for an experiment I want to run. As well as results.

How does music affect dreams? We will seek to answer that question. We'll hope to cover as many genres as we can. If you sign up, you will be required to listen to assigned music as you sleep, and then after a week, report back with the vividness, recall, tone, duration, and general content of your dreams.

Any takers? No, we will not assign you music you hate. Unless you want us to, that is.

RE: An Experiment

If you cannot recall dreams, you can still participate on how music affects dream recall.

Please put down your general music tastes, as well as who you listen to on a regular basis and the variety you want in the mix.

I'm planning on making Spotify playlists for this, if there's not a problem with that for anyone. So, have a computer nearby or put the app on your phone.

RE: An Experiment

I would like a longer selection, but I supposed I could make an expanded form of that station. Would still like your general taste.

Oh, remember. You will be listening to this in your sleep. So, unless you are relaxed by death metal or dubstep, keep them off.

RE: An Experiment

One thing is for certain; I'm listening to Kaizers Orchestra and The Mountain Goats. You can't make me listen to anything else.

One thing is that I would like to keep it at one genre or band so that we can determine what exactly is causing the effect. Otherwise, we won't know what you will be listening to when you go into REM state.

Huh. Interesting, Gwedin.

Okay, I would like people to give me bands they listen to. I have no idea what IDM is, or what "dark drum and bass" entails.

Okay... I have something for Hans. It's a 15 hour mix of Black Sun Empire and Flying Lotus. Just to get started, I guess. I would suggest listening to it a bit before using it, just to make sure it won't keep you up. And getting a Spotify account, if you haven't already. Also, it might be terrible, as I have no taste for this kind of music.

An Experiment

I'll try that tonight. I think Wednesday night I'll use some Hungarian rave music.

By the way, here were my dreams (used FlyLo Fm GTA V):
*The first dream was brief yet strange. I had a dream I was in the back of this red Chevy Suburban, and I was shooting at enemies coming in from these motorcycles (probably Japanese or Korean gangsters, once again, more plot material!). It was a cool dream but I realized it was a dream before it faded away. Heh. I don't think I killed anyone though.

*The second dream was more detailed. It was not just an SS meet-up, but an education transformation meet-up in general that partly involved the IRC. I remember xcriteria being there with his laptop in this IRC room, which was filled with up to 96 people in there (not just from SS but from various places). We met up at this park near this convenience store. It was a boatload of people. I remember a table full of brain-food. A lot of us were there. It was a great dream.

*The third dream (sigh) another depressing dream of me being with my crush. It was actually just mostly talking with each other before a final hug.... slightly depressing because my mind is super-good at alluding me into thinking these dreams are real.

My dreams weren't more or less vivid, because over the past few days they've gotten really strong, vivid, and lucid. However, I did notice that the FlyLo FM music did seem to possibly have a small effect: my dreams correlated more strongly with my current thoughts and such. I'll give the new music a go tonight and report tomorrow.

Holy shit, an epic night. Probably because this was the first time ever I was lucid dreaming. Full-on lucid dreaming. I could sense it. It was awesome. How would I describe it? Think of it kinda like playing a Grand Theft Auto game, but instead it's in first person, and there's no screen, and you can sense all your thought processes going through your head.

Unfortunately the details are somewhat fuzzy, but I remember being at my school and it was almost as if I was in god mode. I was causing shit and nobody tried to get me in trouble or arrest me. There was this one teacher who got angry and tried to get me in trouble, or at least I thought so, but then she simply commented on my graffiti and said it reminded her of the prison gang she used to run in, and I was cool with that.

Damn, I should listen to Flying Lotus each time before I go to bed.
