RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Why are kids in the teenage years such assholes?

So I just go into High School, freshman year almost over now. Just a question, why are kids in the highschool age zone such complete assholes? Everyone only cares about themselves, you have to take hundreds of sports to even begin to be noticed, no one ever helps anyone, and they take every chance they get to make someone elses life miserable. Please tell me this mentality dosen't carry on even after the highschool years.

It's become a part of society and that "phase". Doesn't justify it though.

Remnants.

I also blame it on the decay of society. I'll start by blaming the hippies and the Civil Rights movement Smile

The people that choose not to play sports and just hang out with a couple other people are usually nice. I know because I'm one of them.

When I was in high school I had to deal with a principal who glorified the baseball teams above everyone else because his own son was on the team. I don't care if the son was genuinely good or not, but I don't think he got on that team simply because of his skills.

Glorifying the athletes in US schools is pretty common.

Remember the case about those high school football players that raped a drunk girl and made a video of it, and the school tried to pretty much cover it up?

When school reputation and sports trumps justice, you know something is wrong.

Well, I'll say this: it's an unfortunate byproduct of huge congregations of people being forced together in a place they hate while going through puberty. Honestly though, it's worse in middle school.

It's the tsunami of hormones plus the ineffective and torturous school environment. It should say something to the adults that their actions and rules force students into bullying, suicide, and loads of other problems. of course, i know and agree that some people are fucked up to begin with..but in most of the cases, there are reasons like abuse, neglect, or even not connecting well with people. i hate it when perfectly sane people suddenly turn into assholes. Grrr.

Interesting.

I think it goes down to the question of what is worth learning and what isn't.... things like empathy, metacognition, and logic are all great things to learn.... yet are seldom taught in school.

RE: Why are kids in the teenage years such assholes?

Why Is it Always About You? p. 89

Quote:Adolescent Narcissism: What's Normal, What Isn't

Any bewildered parent of an eleven- or twelve-year-old can tell you about the child who used to like to hang out with Mom or Dad in the kitchen or the garage, who shared confidences . . . then one day just stopped talking civilly to anyone outside a two-year radius and became moody, incomprehensible, and completely self-absorbed. . . . What's happening here, and should you be alarmed about this sudden appearance of what looks like narcissistic behavior?

First of all, there are some hormones speaking, and that's normal. Puberty begins when a part of the brain called the hypothalamus tells a tiny gland called the pituitary to send a wake-up call to the sleeping sex organs. . . . Hormonal surges . . . cause some of the hair-trigger emotions we see in teenagers, as well as the quick shifts from feeling on top of the world to crashes in confidence that are so achingly typical. . . .

Although the ebb and flow of hormones and their accompanying feeling states will continue throughout life, to the young teen, this new intensity is all very unfamiliar and powerful. Even so, chances are the overall emotional tone has less to do with the hormones themselves than with the psychological impact of so many visible physical changes. . . . While they're morphing into much larger creatures with breasts or facial hair (and suffering pimples in the process), kids are convinced that everyone is looking at them with scorn. The result can be a chronic state of humiliation that evokes a repertoire of defensive behavior and attitudes. When you see evidence of those Seven Deadly Sins [of narcissism], think shame management.

At the same time that all these physical and emotional changes are taking place, their minds continue to develop as well. . . . flexing the mind is as enjoyable as chasing each other around the schoolyard or dangling from the monkey bars once was. In a more sophisticated version of the one-year-old child's love affair with the world, teenagers have a love affair with dreams and ideas—especially their own.

. . . Egocentrism becomes as normal a part of adolescent thinking as it once was when they were toddlers, and with a similar adaptive purpose. They are gearing up to take on new roles and responsibilities, and if they can't conceive of themselves as powerful and wonderful, it might be too overwhelming.

It is common for teenagers to focus on themselves to the exclusion of others, believing, for example, that their thoughts, feelings, or experiences are unique and that they are more important in the overall scheme of things than they actually are. . . . younger adolescents in particular are prone to speculation about what others might be thinking (especially about them), and because they are so egocentric, they are convinced that what they assume to be true actually is.

Egocentrism and deductive reasoning in adolescents form a volatile mix, leading to two types of fantasy thinking. . . .

"I'm King of the World!"

The invincibility fable is what allows some teens to engage in risky behavior . . . with little or no fear of consequences. . . . But their fearlessness is not just foolhardy—it also has an adaptive component. . . . the adolescent on the brink of adulthood must feel confident enough to take on more adult challenges and develop more grown-up levels of competency. Feeling invincible neutralizes crippling doubt.

. . .

"You Couldn't Possibly Understand!"

The personal fable has all the earmarks of narcissistic grandiosity and can lead a teenager to think and behave as if he or she were somehow more special than others and destined for glory regardless of talent or effort. When this manifests as more than temporary arrogance, contempt, or entitlement, the underlying narcissism may be unhealthy. On the other hand, if fantasy serves to sustain motivation and leads to real accomplishment, this is healthy narcissism in action.

. . .

When Things Go Wrong

There are basically three things that can happen to arrest healthy identity development and perpetuate adolescent narcissism in the young adult-to-be. The first is called foreclosure, and it tends to occur when teens are too intimidated by the expectations of their families or culture to engage in normal experimentation. These are often the children of overbearing narcissistic parents who cannot tolerate the teenager's growing need for separateness. . . .

A second possibility is the formation of a negative identity in opposition to everything the child has been taught up to that point. These teens tend to feel that they are supremely independent and evolved, but the truth is that their entire identity is formed in opposition to authority instead of as an outcome of integrating that which they have been given with that which they have discovered on their own. There is no mature process of self-examination and identification with the positive values of a larger group, only an angry rejection of expectations that they find unattainable or unappealing. Often, their attitudes and behavior are fueled by a narcissistic rage based on disappointed entitlement. There may also be a considerable amount of grandiosity in this position, as opposed to the more realistic perception of Self and Other that comes from healthy identity achievement. As long as identity is based more on being against than for, the narcissism persists.

A third type of failure to achieve a mature identity is called identity diffusion, and it is a problem that can plague an individual well into adulthood. These are the young people who have few commitments to any goals or values and who often seem apathetic about taking on any role. . . . They just don't seem to care what their identity is. The narcissism of these teens is perhaps the most primitive of all—the false Self that masks their lack of development is a deflated one, lacking in the omnipotence and grandiosity that could propel them toward some experience of mastery and definition of Self.

Just a taste there of how this kind of thing can be normal and adaptive but can turn pathological, as I said. Needless to say, I highly recommend reading this book in full.

To answer your question, no, it isn't supposed to continue after adolescence. A person can't be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder until they're 18 (there are other criteria), largely for the reason of the above—certain behaviors that would contribute to the diagnosis in adulthood are adaptive in adolescence. You will find that, actual narcissists aside, people mostly grow up after high school and its stress are gone, and you might even connect with people you used to loathe.

I assume that most teens are trying to figure out who they are (I am no exception), and the best way they can fight low self esteem and to fit in is degrade other people. The only way out is a) to be like them or b) if you are outright disgusted by them, pretend to be as confident as possible and that you don't give a shit.

RE: Why are kids in the teenage years such assholes?

Haha, what? Have you never seen FOX news in your life?

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

  • An increasing dependence and addiction to television, Internet, video games, and phones

In what way does it imply that human nature has changed if you're attributing it more or less directly to material & historical circumstance?
