RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I need to vent right now, this is crazy

Hello all. I REALLY have to vent about school right now. Ready? Begin.

Well, the day started when I slipped and fell on a patch of black ice right outside of the school. The admins saw that everyone was falling, but didnt do JACK SHIT about it. Didn't even put rocksalt down. I bruised my tailbone and it hurts when i move or sit down. At my second period (my school makes some people come in 1st), which is algebra, the teacher gave me a sheet that stated that im failing and not trying my hardest (i was trying, honest). Then came the worst part. HE WAS GONNA PUT ME IN A LOWER LEVEL CLASS. OH FOR FUCKS SAKE. My parents had to sign it.

When I came home, I gave them the sheet. They were PISSED. And FYI, I tried convincing my parents with the pros and cons of online school and unschooling, they were like, "I went to high school and i didnt like it, but i had to deal with it." NO SHIT. IT WAS DIFFERENT BACK THEN. Noo

Sorry if i am all over the place, i just had to let it out.

I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.

If you need tech support, PM me. Everything's free of charge. I use Teamviewer in case it's needed.

RE: I need to vent right now, this is crazy

Sounds bad. And very typical, for parents to respond like that.

Advice: Think of any given conversation like that as part of an extended series of them. Over time, learn about what various people are saying, and try to educate them about a different way to think about education. Instead of something to suffer through... maybe it's better to think of it in terms of what you get out of it?

I'd suggest trying to learn more about their experience of school, good and bad. Again, do this over time. It's jog their memory and it might increase their empathy for your experiences, rather than being stuck in "shut down the complaining" mindset.

Are you familiar with Ken Robinson, Nikhil Goyal, Will Richardson, and various other TED/TEDx speakers and authors, who question the so-called "factory model" system of education?

Check out Ken Robinson's "Changing Education Paradigms" (in my signature), if you haven't seen it.

And, this spoken word video from Suli Breaks is worth checking out. The parent interaction scenes came to mind in particular.

RE: I need to vent right now, this is crazy

I feel ya buddy. The school system is totally messed up. Parents always say, "I know it sucks, but you just have to deal with it". WELL SURELY IF IT SUCKS, THAT TELLS YOU THAT SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. As Will Smith said, parents just don't understand.

I can definitely feel you.

I think xcriteria nailed it. I think you really need to get your parents to emphasize with your problems.
