RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I'm...actually really content with my schooling situation :)
Recently I switched community colleges and my major from biology to computer science. Since I was only one semester in it wasn't a big deal. Right now I'm taking computer science I, introduction to computer science, calculus w/ anal geometry, mathematical structures, and the bullshit college success skills class which I'm already done with since I took the class online and got a little bit ahead. In my computer science I class we actually are just programming in Java, and I'm really glad that the class is more project / problem solving oriented than it is on tests which account for very little of our overall grade in comparison to the labs and projects. Calculus w/ anal geometry II is right down my alley since I like to get really stoned in my free time and then do math while stoned. Mathematical structures is basically just a logic class which is really easy. I have over 100% in it right now. The only class I kind of dislike is intro to computer science because the professor just isn't any good at explaining in a way that makes sense. So I've just been learning from the book.
Right now my college GPA is over 3.8 and it's looking poised to go up higher if I maintain all of my A's this semester. I shouldn't have any problem transferring wherever I want to go in the state due to the transfer agreements in place. Oh and did I mention I have money leftover on my pell grant after tuition is paid? I'm gonna miss community college tuition rates after I transfer.
Who am I? Who are YOU?

Ah, computer science. One of the few high school classes I took that felt worthwhile, though I know now I haven't the temperament for it. Java coding is repetitive, yo.
I think you've given me hope that community college won't be all that bad when I get there.

My school dosent have that. The kids would probably steal the cables and parts :(
I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.

Computer science doesn't involve building computers; it involves coding on computers that were already in a computer lab.
...I'm guessing your school doesn't have a computer lab?
