RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

So the reasons that are on the site are true? I don't know because I don't take selfies, but if the person that takes maybe it's waiting for likes and similar things so can lead to sadness or something worse. I see people on my school that take selfies on instagram and then they're asking for likes and on facebook too ...

I think that has to do with insecurity and low self-esteem, and that can lead to a lot of screwy things.

I used to take selfies but I didn't care for any likes or stuff like that. I only did it for the photo challenges on Instagram.

I totally see that! Now I have a good excuse to tell people to stop taking selfies and posting them for likes! Oh, and start calling them self-portraits again!

Quote:I didn't but if look down you'll see one proff.

i read the article hansgrohe linked to, it's literally based on nothing more than the opinion of some government psychiatrist who thinks that selfies "could affect the development of the country in the future as the number of new-generation leaders will fall short. It will hinder the country’s creativity and innovation."

her opinion is that addiction to taking selfies should qualify as a mental illness, and that it's making a generation of selfie takers less self-confident, thereby reducing the number of future leaders, threatening the development of the country.

1. her worry that selfies are going to cause a shortage of good politicians is obviously unwarranted. it's just obvious. capable politicians aren't the kind of people to be deterred by not getting enough likes on their selfies. and there's enough people everywhere in the world that there's always going to be a surplus of political candidates.

2. there's no evidence to suggest that persistent selfie takers can't deal with not taking selfies, so there's no evidence to suggest that it's an addiction. so there's no justification in classifying it as a mental illness

well, in other side in my opinion , your speech I think it's right.
When I read for first time that it could be a mental illness I thought " wtf what in the world!? or why specifically 'mental illness' "
so I support your opinion , and probably is certain that taking selfies and waiting for approval from friends to get likes it may lead to insecurity and low self-esteem as Hansgrohe said .

I generally think people who take excessive selfies are narcissistic bastards wasting their worthless time.

It's annoying when someone takes thousands of 'selfies' and post it everywhere like , some friend added me in facebook and she takes selfies everyday or photos of the food that is eating or saying that is leaving home and going to walk taking photo of their shoes omg who cares?

people are smart enough to have a good idea of how attractive they are without having to count the number of likes on their selfies. and holy shit somebody agreed with something i said

selfies aren't really all that time consuming. what do you consider excessive?

The whole entire point of selfies is to make yourself feel beautiful/handsome/etc. If you had high self esteem you wouldn't care if people "like" a picture of you.

Selfies have really been around for a long time. They were just called "self-portraits" before. I'd assume Napoleon must've suffered a lot of health problems.

Self-portraits took more time then smiling and snapping away, or using a mirror.

Napoleon did all that publicity because he knew that propaganda worked very well, and reminding people he was awesome with paintings really helped, even when he lost battles.

1.Often not to be shown to someone else if painted by themselves.
2.The only way to show anyone how you looked without seeing you directly was portraits.
3.Napoleon didn't care how he looked, he cared that he was looked at.
4.The article says that if you take a lot of selfies it leads to mental problems, not you take selfies because you have mental problems.

RE: wtf? taking selfies lead to mental problems

Ahhh, isolatedsistem is just confusing correlation and causation. Just because excessive selfies correlate to mental illness (I've yet to see actual data on this, but let's pretend it does for this explanation) does not mean that it actually -causes- mental illness. It simply means that people who happen to be mentally ill tend to take selfies more frequently. Smile

Here's an article on the flip side of the coin, promoting the potential benefits of the popularization of selfies.
