RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Three Rants
1. In school, we do this thing called "Sustained silent reading." Until recently, I used to just mess with emulators for old consoles and computers (Windows 1.0, Apple DOS, Master System, SNES) instead of actually reading. Now, my only free time before I get home is gone. I have to read books. I can't even read articles! IT HAS TO BE BOOKS OR ELSE IT ISN'T READING TO THE SCHOOL!
2. We have lunch assigned seats. This is bad because people want to sit with friends, but their friends want to sit with other friends, so they can't! I used to sit with friends, but they (understandably) couldn't take some of the others at the table. Now I'm stuck with whiny girls and a snack theif.
3. According to the school, anything we do on their networks is owned by them. In other words, if I draw a picture, make a game, or write a story on the internet during school hours, they OWN it. I'm writing this post in school, so they supposedly own this post. e

RE: Three Rants
Sounds like your school really wants students to know who's in charge. It's sad how many people go from helping students to turning them into joyless/brainwashed servants. No one has the right to make a mind bot out of anyone.

A snack thief huh.
I hate those sorts of policies that pretty much claim ownership for your own ideas simply because you use their systems. Reminds me of a movie where some dude borrowed a quarter from his friend and won a million dollars at the slots, then they ended up going at each other(it was a comedy). The winner only wanted to return the quarter because it was his luck, but the one who gave the quarter believed that if he hadn't given the quarter, his friend wouldn't have had the cash to give it one more go.
In the end, I believe a bum got the briefcase full of cash...

RE: Three Rants
Sustained silent reading? We have the same thing at my school. In fact, it's called the same thing. I don't really see the very big deal considering you don't even read a whole lot anyway during that period. Actually, I like SSR. It kills a good amount of class time.
Ugh, I would hate lunch assigned seats. You're forced to sit where you are at all times? I'd hate that. Plus, I'm not particularly fond of eating my food where it's loud as fuck and it's filled with people I may or may not get along with, and alongside there being an awful smell. My cafeteria has this god-awful smell so bad I almost puked. I'm never going in there again.
How the hell can they claim ownership of your ideas? Sounds rather unorthodox and unethical. I made it. The school had nothing to do with it other than the fact that it was made on their computers. I don't see a principal or a teacher helping me with the damn idea.

I think I'm going to make a DeviantART alt under my school's name and make a recolor Homestuck OC during school. That'll cause some hatred for a supposed School DeviantART account.
Oh, and it's hilarious that the school now owns a post that is anti-school.

RE: Three Rants
I can almost relate to number 2. There's no assigned seats at lunch at my school, but since I have no friends and there's no empty tables anywhere in the cafeteria where I can sit alone, I'm trapped sitting around the most ignorant and dumb girls.

RE: Three Rants
Nope. There's tables scattered around the court yard but you can't sit at them at lunch.

I literally don't see the point in forcing everyone to be in the cafeteria anyway. If they did that to me I'd go bizerk.

How do they define "books?" For example, could you assemble articles, or posts, into a PDF, and have a one-off book printed (say, by Amazon, or bind them together at Fedex Office or a print shop), and use that as your "book?"

Yeah I was thinking that as well. I'm pretty sure Copyright Law doesn't allow that...then again I haven't taken a look at Copyright Law very much.
Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

So a book that hasn't been included on their list of books they want kids to read isn't allowed?...
Oh that couldn't possibly be censorship.(sarcasm)

Yeah, that's very Orwellian.
We should write a short book on this theme and get it put on those AR lists...

Three Rants
My last school instituted assigned seating for a brief period. The students started singing Happy Birthday for a teacher who was in the cafeteria, then the vice-principal stormed in and made a big fuss about how much noise we were making and instituted two new rules: assigned seating and reduced noise levels. I don't know if this was on-the-spot or if he had been planning it. Since I always sat with 3 close friends, this wasn't a terribly great thing to go through. I'm honestly still not sure if this was part of some hare-brained plan to get us to be more orderly (because the worth of a student is measured in how quiet and acquiescent they are) or if they were just drunk on power. (Although Happy Birthday is copyrighted, and it's technically not legal to sing it publicly; maybe the vice principal was simply concerned about a possible lawsuit.)
I also had reading time in the 4th grade but things weren't too bad then. I don't recall anything about any of my schools owning anything I made, fortunately.
