RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I finally dropped out

I've finished grade nine, which makes dropping out legal for me in my country. I still can't believe it. I've been waiting for this since the beginning of grade five, when I decided I would never finish school. Is it normal that I still don't feel free of all this shit? /:

You aren't free. You're freed from compulsory education, but you're still not free.

Congrats to you though, school is hell.

How did I know some idiot like you would come along and say something like that? Please, when it comes to people asking for help, refrain from spreading your agenda.

Re: I finally dropped out

I expected to feel free from school. But I still feel like it's haunting me or something, I don't really know how to explain that, especially with my horrible English.

I dropped out because I felt like 95% of the things I'd learn in school wouldn't be useful in any way for me. It's just a waste of time. Also, I'm either too stupid or too intelligent to get along with some of the people in there. Who knows. Not like it's going to be a lot better now that I'm out, but still. At least I won't have that many people around me who tell me what I have to do.

In September, I'm starting to work as graphic designer in a printing and ad company, something I'm probably going to enjoy. My long time dream is to be an artist though. I know it's not easy, but honestly, I believe I can do it.

Then just give it time and school will be a long gone memory...when I dropped out it felt weird, because all my friends were still in school.

I just tried scanning some stuff, but somehow I killed my scanner, so I only have a few sketches I did during class. :/

Re: I finally dropped out

You aren't free yet, because you're still trapped under that nagging feeling of "Where to go from here." I fucking tell you people in my Drop Out advice article here to come up with a damn plan before enacting the drop out procedure. So far my advice has fallen on deaf ears.

Oh shit, that must've been so culturally ignorant of me, sorry. It sort of slipped my mind.

"Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby "schooled" to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is "schooled" to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavor are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question."- Deschooling Society, ivan Illich

Congratulations on your decision. I hope all goes well in the future for you! Also, do you need qualifications or anything? I know here in Australia, well for my careers at least, half the shit I wanna do needs some 4 year University degree as a qualification!

Congrats, Joey Smile

It takes some time for the feeling of trapped-ness to go away. Depending on what you end up doing with your life, it might never go away (people with 9-5 jobs they hate fall into this category). You'll probably be fine though.
