RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Narcissistic parents
As of late, I have been frequenting the subreddit called r/raisedbynarcissists ( http://www.reddit.com/r/RaisedByNarcissists).
I would like to ask School Survival if you see your parents as narcissistic, or as more empathic.
Luckily, my parents are far too empathic to qualify as narcissists. My father is one of the nicest people to grace this earth, which can be seen in his way of treating other people, which I seek to emulate (with some alterations).
However, my mother, while not utterly self-obsessed has a narcissistic streak. While she is generally nice, empathic, and caring, she is also a hypochondriac, and plays an odd guilt trip on me whenever I am sick. At first, she blames me not wearing my coat, or washing my hands, or sterilizing myself with Zyklon B as the cause of my sickness. Then, she will basically yell that she has to work, and can't take care of me, and that it's all my fault. Then, she will cool down and happily take care of me. Again, not completely narcissistic, but it's an oddity.

RE: Narcissistic parents
My parents aren't particularly narcissistic, but they're pretty judgmental.

In what way? Do they criticise your habits, interests and opinions?

RE: Narcissistic parents
My parents arent so bad. However, it seems like my mother has suffered some psychological fracture sometime in the past, and now has some obnoxious and destructive addiction wealth. Not completely but its like a bipolar thing, swaying back and forth. On one hand she wants to amass wealth and become rich(as if it'll solve all her problems) and on the other she wants to spend money as soon as we have it on hand(proportional to attained wealth. Thus more money means more spending).
The concept of saving, budget and investment dont seem to mean much, no matter how hard she tries try them.
But not narcissistic. Just a lack financial skills. Both parents in fact. At home, I was like the Swiss banker, the only one who knew how to properly handle money

Narcissistic parents
My mother sees me as old enough to make my own choices, so she doesn't really care.

RE: Narcissistic parents
I suppose I am somewhat of a narcissist. Not a lot, but somewhat.
I'm not sure if narcissist is the accurate term, but my brother is extremely unempathetic. So much it drives me insane. He has the "if it doesn't affect me don't give a shit" attitude strongly installed in his brain.

Does your mom take any kind of medication or does she have any kind of help? Has she ever been hospitalized?

Are her mood swings harmful to others? Or does she wallow in self loathing one moment and become extroverted in the next?

Narcissistic parents
Parents should need to care of their children. They also need to understand the children and guide them.

Narcissistic parents
She refuses to take medication, preferring marijuana and loud music. Her mood swings aren't too extreme, she hasn't been hospitalized for them, but it leads to her acting relatively nice one day and bitchy the next. Makes me want to do her head in sometimes.
