RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

My school's getting strict about ID's...

Today, the assistant principal (I think) of my school announced at lunch that they are going to start routinely checking everyone for their ID and apparently if they don't have it with them, they get suspended and are barred from attending the end of the year field trip... or something like that. The bottom line is is that they're getting all serious about having a piece of plastic with your name and picture all of a sudden, just because a couple of kids lost theirs and don't have one, and if you don't have one then you get punished. Yeah...

I literally don't understand the new hard-on for IDs. I mean, it should be easy to verify a student just by asking them.

My school's getting strict about ID's...

I had a four-digit ID number and a plastic slip thingy in middle school, but I just memorized the number and kept the slip...somewhere. All I needed it for was to buy lunch at the cafeteria. (Which is another story...)

At least I didn't have to deal with hall monitors. Talk about stultifying bureaucracy.

Regarding student ID: I can get if schools want to keep basic records of students for the sake of convenience (for both parties), but I'm not sure IDs are really necessary. I can also get if an official unfamiliar with a particular student would need a way to find out their name, and even discounting the fact that a student will most likely respond truthfully if asked their name (unless they need to hide it and are cunning enough to realize this official doesn't know them), a basic central records system would probably fit the job. Then again, no two situations are really the same...

Even the US government doesn't force us to carry ID(having ID will simplify things, but not having an ID isn't a crime itself. It's just an inconvenience)

My school's getting strict about ID's...

Unless it's stated in the official handbook of school rules and shit like that, then they can't actually suspend people for it. Even then, I don't think they could put something in the official handbook that's so pointless.

My school does this, too, they threaten to punish us but they don't usually do so.

Yep.

You like the Arstotzkan ID? I like your SS ID; perhaps if brainiac ever gets around to implementing his bureaucracy of doom we could use it. Along with the Arstotzkan ID.

I can't see it. Perhaps that's just because I'm using a school computer currently.

And I've been thinking about this since I replied last to you. I just wanted to confirm my theory. I still really don't believe that they could punish you for not carrying your student ID. However, this is, in some cases, like a job. Most teachers at the majority of the schools that I've been to have had to wear the IDs around their necks that show who they are. It may just depend on how big your school is, and how the teacher-student relationships vary with familiarity.

However, if the District's book of rules states clearly that all students must carry an ID, then they do have the right to punish the students that refuse to do so. I suppose you could combat the punishment [If you get one] by striking their ego and asking them if they'd really like to waste their valuable time on such a small matter, and that you'll bring your ID soon. [I'd then start bringing it for at least a month. After that, if they don't check you regularly or at all, you're probably in the clear.] It might be nice to just have it on you in the bottom of your backback or something though.

RE: My school's getting strict about ID's...

Update; the principal was pretty much bluffing and trying to scare us into bringing our IDs to school by saying they'd be checking, and they haven't checked even once since saying that.

Same at my school, though I remember walking through the gates to get into school and the security guard guarding it was accusing these 3 girls of not actually being students at the school. I don't actually know whether that was true or not, nor did I care.
