RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Suspended for headphones

A teacher said to take them off, and I started off saying that I was minding my own business and doing my work. That there were 3 students in the classroom and I wasn't bothering anybody. She then said that they were school rules and to take them off. I said that she was the only one bitching about them and that nobody else gave a fuck, and that she started more than fixed anything by saying take them off.
She kept saying that they were school rules. I then asked where I could go to listen to my music, and she said someone on Arcade St. (the st. the school is on.)

II said that I wasn't going to take them off, and she said go down to a assistant principals office.

I was suspended for the rest of that day and he gave me a bus token to get home. He said that he was going to talk more to the teacher and see what she wanted to do with this. He said that my mother needed to call before 2 PM preferably, but 4 PM at the most.
When I came home, I told my mother that she needed to call the assistant principal.
I don't think that she has because she left a bit afterward and hasn't been back home yet (she's with her boyfriend) and it's almost 5:50 PM.

On the sheet the assistant principal gave me to give to my mom, the teacher emailed the assistant principal and said that I said, "quit bitching and nobody gives a fuck". Also that there needs to be a meeting.

Your school has a no headphone policy? Not alone.

My school has a similar policy to. Get caught with it twice and they'll take it away. I don't understand it. What if I'm eating lunch and I just want to listen to some of my own music? Nope, that's not happening, not at my school. I literally don't understand the massive hissy fits over it. As long as it's not interrupting the "learning" I see no problem.

My county recently stated that electronic devices can be used during personal time, and teachers can let students use electronic devices in classrooms, so that's nice. I digress, are you at a public or private school?

RE: Suspended for headphones

I agree, you "should" be free to use your devices if they aren't bothering people, but schools are allowed to set their own rules. Even teachers may be able to. In a factory-model school, it's their classroom.

Certainly, swearing at your teacher or otherwise talking disrespectfully is a recipe for trouble. Rule #1: don't tell your teacher to quit bitching... that's just asking to get punished.

We can all discuss better ways to run schools and set school rules, and complain ("bitch") about what's wrong with the factory-model, but trying to take an attitude within them isn't going to go very far.

I would ask the assistant principal, your mom, and your teacher if there's any way you can listen to your headphones going forward. I'd apologize for your attitude and language, but try explaining that listening to music helps you focus.

Just don't slip into trying to fight them. Try to have a respectful conversation.

I'd even ask if getting a doctor's note would help.

I attend a public school. I started the argument off more respectfully, but when all she said was, "it's the rules", that made me say what I said. "I don't wish to argue this with you" is what teachers say when you give good reasons.

RE: Suspended for headphones

Yeah, I understand that's frustrating. Maybe there's a better way to get through the brick wall, though?

Not sure what that is, beyond what I suggested above. :/

One more reason to work to change how schools work.

RE: Suspended for headphones

I've gotten more strict about electronics because I don't want to be the star of some kid's YouTube bloopers.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I listen to music in almost every class I attend. Most of my teacher either don't notice or don't care. And only one teacher has ever confiscated my ear buds.

Would you rather get suspended than giving them your devices?

Suspended, because of the fact that I kinda use my devices a lot(and I have a few...private things on there). Although....I wonder about Goss v Lopez...

Yeah, suspended. My parents would be competent enough, I get a few days off from prison, and I'd rather not let them have my belongings.
