RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Why I dislike school reading

I love reading. Last summer alone I read a total of 13 actual decent-length books. I most recently finished my first of 3 Kohn books I bought myself with Christmas money. I'm in the middle of one and our English class finally started actually reading a book. A Catcher In The Rye to be exact. I'm interested in the book, really, but there are 2 problems: I'm obsessive about finishing one before starting another and I want to read it when I want to at my pace. Sometimes I read a lot in one night (especially the end of The Art of Racing in the Rain!) And sometimes I don't even read more than 4 pages. With school, we're being assigned 2 or 3 chapters per night and maybe 1 if it's a long chapter. I hate it. It makes me not want to read. I actually read my Kohn book during class instead of Catcher to spite the teacher.

Last night was a disaster though. Facing a whole 5 chapters to read because I'm behind I got pissed and went to read my book but.... I didn't want to read that either. My anger consumed me. It drove me away from reading.

This is a problem.

Ignore the emojis. My phone won't let me get rid of them. Yes I tried backspace.

catcher in the rye amazed me with the amount of boring whining pointless bullshit retardedness that could fit into one book. i don't blame you for being angry, someone actually got so mad reading that piece of shit that he shot john lennon

RE: Why I dislike school reading

School does a good job at killing any motivation for teenagers to read more books. Often, it's not what the person wants to read, but rather what the school wants the person to read. Often times, the person may very well be disinterested in the book at hand. This really doesn't motivate anyone to read more.

Plus, whenever they do let you read, you have to read among a certain criteria of books, and often they might force you to write about what happened, take notes, answer questions, etc.

I agree. In-school reading is mostly bullshit. Only sometimes did I actually have an interest in the book at hand.

Why I dislike school reading

You think any JTG books could fly with the 'student choice' things Hans mentioned?

And yes, I agree with the general sentiment about school reading. I haven't read CiTH though; it is on my eventual list...but is it really that bad?

^I'd say Catcher is one of those "mixed bag" books and if you talk about it you get a lot of mixed reactions. I'd say you read it yourself and feel free to make your own opinion.

I find that's true of a good number of things, Hans. I'll get to it eventually.

RE: Why I dislike school reading

Catcher isn't really a "Mixed bag." People have two reactions; Love or hate. I loved it, but if you and the protaginist don't "click," you won't.

Why I dislike school reading

I read more on the internet than I read my paper books these days. It's a wonder I finished The Kon-Tiki expedition about a month ago. Damn fine book.

I used to skip ahead in my 6th grade reading class; I found trying to tune out the teacher while I was reading to be rather challenging. I put my bookmark ahead though, which was foolish since I got called out for being 'rude' because I read ahead. Tuck Everlasting was a good book, though!

I remember my 7th grade reading class was worse, though. It got to the point where we had to read one chapter from a book I had little desire to read(some of the hardest reading I've done, and I've read stuff way worse than those books since then), twice, and then answering four questions about the chapter. They weren't easy yes/no questions either. A good number of the books were survival stories/Iditarod stories (the Alaskan dogsled race; the teacher was a fan of it if the big poster on the back wall indicated anything).

Yeah. I'll be honest, I found some parallels between myself and Holden Caulfield, and hopefully DoA doesn't start hating me for saying that.

I'd say if I were reading a book about some asshole like, say, stephen926, I'd probably hate the book myself. It's all a matter of how we "click" with the characters.

Why I dislike school reading

I'd enjoy a book about good ol' Stephen. It would probably be an uncomfortable read, considering how it would probably show us a lot more about his depressing 'asshole who believes in school' mentality, but it would be fascinating! And also depressing and uncomfortable. But still.

I haven't received an e-mail reply from him yet about the report, by the way. Maybe I'll send a PM and hope he gets e-mail notifications about PMs.

EDIT: stephen926 has private messaging disabled. You cannot send private messages to this user.

OOHHH, IT IS SAD DAY! ;(
