RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Parents blaming their mistakes on Teenagers

I'm sick of this, so today me and my mom were going out for coffee, it was 9 pm. We just went in drive through and headed for home. She's not the best driver. We were coming across a red light, and she wasn't slowing down. The red light was up miles before we were even near the intersection. I thought she would notice once we got a bit closer. She just drove past it, I asked if she even saw that red light, and she said, "Oh crap I didn't notice until I went through!" And then the entire way home she kept bitching at me about how I should've told her, and kept blaming me. Fucking excuse me? Your the damn driver, shouldn't you be paying attention? I guess adults can just blame us cause were going through our hormonal change. Or shit like this shows a persons immaturity, and how they can't take responsibilities for their own actions.

RE: Parents blaming their mistakes on Teenagers

My brother can be like this as well. Though sometimes it's both people at fault, considering you weren't told to watch out for lights, and you weren't driving, you are not at fault, at all. Some people need to learn to really become mature.

So in future, you should point out EVERYTHING you see. Every stop sign, every red light, every pedestrian crossing the road, JUST in case she misses something. Even tell her when to change gears (if it's a manual), and which route to take.

Lol this.

Honestly, I think that's just how mothers are.

Just like dad's are notorious for the "hey ____, I'm dad" jokes.

It's annoying, but I wouldn't take it too seriously, parents are crazy. Unless she was actually verbally abusing you in the process I suggest to just shrug it off. If you really feel the need to, say something like "I'm not the one driving!"

Don't know your situation. Good luck Smile

RE: Parents blaming their mistakes on Teenagers

My mother does that too sometimes.

I generally just say "Look, if you can't drive then just ask me to do it!" with a smile. She just gets mad, throws an vulgar insult and continues on while I don't have to hear anything about it anymore.

RE: Parents blaming their mistakes on Teenagers

It seems to reinforce the stereotype of women being terrible drivers...

My mother is a pretty good driver, really. She just can't handle icy roads though; partly due to the terrible accident she had in the 80's. With Maine ice, I can't blame her.
